Title: WORLD LANGUAGE TEACHER

Reports To: Department Chair

Duration: 10 Months

Salary: Salary schedule is based upon the education and experience of each teacher. One year of salary schedule credit for each year of full-time teaching experience up to a maximum of five years.

Definition

The classroom teacher is responsible for the organization and operation of classroom instruction in accordance with course, department, school and district goals, objectives, policies and procedures. The teacher is accountable to his/her department head and principal.

The classroom teacher, as a subject-matter specialist, prepares and organizes daily instruction, emphasizing quality instruction as the most important function of the school. Cooperating with fellow teachers and his/her department head, the teacher will facilitate student achievement of established curricular goals through a variety of appropriate teaching techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participates with other staff members in determining and achieving school programs, goals and objectives.

  • Follows department goals and course objectives as the basis of instructional planning.

  • Pre-assesses student readiness for new instruction.

  • Paces program through the curriculum according to student/class needs and abilities.

  • Matches resources, teaching strategies and assessment to the learning goals and objectives.

  • Prepares and executes lesson plans according to course objectives.

  • Clearly communicates the expectations for each lesson.

  • Organizes instructional materials for each lesson.

  • Makes effective use of class time.

  • Varies teaching to accommodate a variety of learning styles and resources.

  • Demonstrates clearly the relationship between new and previously presented material.

  • Assigns and evaluates class work and homework on a timely basis.

  • Assesses student progress regularly.

  • Clarifies concepts and strengthens skills through use of relevant examples and/or demonstrations.

  • Involves students in the learning process.

  • Demonstrates knowledge, understanding and skill to teach the subject matter.

  • Establishes and maintains an appropriate instructional climate.

  • Clearly communicates classroom, as well as school, rules and procedures.

  • Maintains discipline and deals with unacceptable student behavior consistently and appropriately.

  • Maintains and submits upon request accurate and complete records as required by law, District policy and administrative regulations.

  • Upholds and enforces departmental and school rules, administrative regulations and Board Policy.

  • Demonstrates effective communication skills when dealing with immediate supervisors, parents, students, peers and other school groups.

  • Participates in school/community relations and strives to present a positive school image to the community when serving in a representative role for the school district.

  • Continues professional development.

  • Fulfills all contractual obligations.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: establishing and maintaining constructive relationships; adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting tact and patience; and working flexible hours.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision; using standardized practices and/or methods. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a clean atmosphere.

Certifications/Licenses Valid, Illinois Teaching License with a(n) Italian Endorsement
