Job Title: PT Technical Services Assistant

Hourly Rate: $14.00 - $17.00

General Statement of Duties: A position performing circulation related tasks involving library materials and collection. Also assists library patrons performing Library Assistant duties.

Supervision Received: Works under the general direction and supervision of the Assistant Library Director or designee.

Supervision Exercised: None.

Essential Job Functions: Under the general direction of the Assistant Library Director, or designee, orders and processes all new materials in the library collection, including, but not limited to books, audio-visual materials, and magazines.

Assists in the interlibrary loans process. Works with third party information technology company, such as Bibliomation, to maintain accurate and current public on-line catalog; enters new items, reclassifies items, and deletes overdue, missing, or disposed items. Under the direction of the Assistant Library Director, pulls obsolete materials from the collection and disposes.

Repairs and mends worn items and/or prepares books for rebinding. Prepares lists of new items for patrons. Reviews all donated materials for suitability to add to the library collections.

Assists in book sales. Regular and punctual attendance.

Other Job Functions Duties: Ensures the library has all required books needed for Vernon Public Schools Summer Reading List, and other school programs.

Assists in training new Technical Services Assistants. Fills in for Library Assistants, as needed. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

Other duties as required. Performs related work as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear and perform repetitive tasks with hands, wrists and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk, kneel, use hands to operate, finger, handle or feel objects or controls and reach with hands and arms; may be required to perform repetitive motions.

The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop and crouch. May regularly be required to lift, push or pull up to 50 pounds. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Employee performs a variety of simple tasks following instructions provided. Some tasks require independent judgment and initiative.

May be exposed to dust, book mold and mildew; fluctuations in inside temperature & electro-magnetic radiation as a computer screen. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet to moderately loud.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of the Dewey Decimal Classification System, and alphabetical filing.

Familiarity in library cataloging systems. Working knowledge of library materials organization, circulation and other practices. Excellent customer service skills; strong oral and written communication skills; excellent organizational skills.

Critical thinking skills with the ability to draw conclusions or approaches to problems to implement solutions; ability to foster relationships and deal effectively with employees and the general public. Ability to work independently and in a team. Must be computer proficient with the ability to learn software programs specific to the job.

Ability to use standard office equipment. Ability to work evenings and weekends. A Police background check will be required.

Experience & Training: Associates degree from an accredited institution, with at least three (3) years in library technical services experience.

Must obtain Library Technical Assistant certificate within one year of hire. Proficiency in working with office computers and related library circulation applications. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
