The City of Anaheim Community Services Department is seeking

Recreation Leader I's.This is a part-time position averaging 20 hours per week, however, no minimum number of hours is guaranteed. Hours may include weekends, evenings, and some holidays. The following locations currently have vacanciesfor Recreation Leader I:

CampVenture-During the summer, this position will lead a group of camp participants through activities such as outdoor sports, games, and crafts. This is a ten-week program for ages 6-12, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. from June 10 - August 16. During the remainder of the year, if available, this position will assist with afterschool programing Monday-Friday 3pm-6pm. Experience working with children, creative, energetic and engaging personalities highly desired.

Community Centers and Family Resource Centers

  • Staff will provide support to our daily operations and interact with the youth, families, and senior patrons in our local Community and Family Resource Centers. This position performs a variety of facility attendant duties, including monitoring facility use, handling the set-up and take down of tables, chairs, and other equipment for facility user groups, and providing program and service information to the public. Must be available to work at varied locations Monday through Sunday between business hours.

Oak Canyon Nature Center

  • Oak Canyon Nature Center staff support our day camp program during the summer and assist with daily operations, trail maintenance, facility rentals, and nature-based programming throughout the remainder of the year. During the summer, the work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Experience working with children and passion for the outdoors is desirable.

Pearson Park Amphitheatre-Pearson Park theater staff are involved in every aspect of our theater which features concerts, cultural shows, family friendly entertainment and Summer Nights Under the Stars Program. The position is a vital member of the cultural arts team providing customer service, snack bar operations, usher service; event set up and clean-up activities including custodial support. The typical hours for this position are evening and weekend shifts, but may vary depending on the event.

Tiny Tots Academy

  • Tiny Tots Academy staff prepare children ages 3-5 years old for kindergarten through a curriculum which includes STEM, language and literacy, arts and crafts, circle time, large motor and fine motor skills. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Education or background in early childhood development is desirable, as well as experience working with children.

Youth Programs-Staff will supervise and actively participate in program activities for after school and mobile recreation programs including: STARS, Fun on Wheels, and Ramp N' Roll. Must be available to work at varied park locations throughout Anaheim from 2:30pm

  • 6:00pm Monday-Friday. Ideal candidates are active, outgoing, have the ability to help with homework and have experience working with children.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is the entry-level class in the Recreation Leader series. Incumbents learn City recreation programs, activities, facilities, and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. Work of incumbents is usually supervised and follows an established structure or pattern. An employee may be promoted from Recreation Leader I to Recreation Leader II without qualifying through the competitive process. Placement within the series is subject to department needs and an incumbent's qualifications.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and leading a variety of indoor and outdoor program activities and/or systems at one or multiple sites; prepare and set up program sites and daily activities.

  • Evaluate, assess, and monitor facilities and field conditions at program sites; provide users and prospective users information regarding the use of the facilities; monitor the use and care of program equipment and supplies; assist in the inspection of facilities for safety and cleanliness; inform supervisor of facility hazards or when equipment needs replacing.

  • Assist with games and activities for program participants; coach and teach gym sports activities, sportsmanship and rules of conduct to program participants; and operate electronic scorekeeping equipment; officiate youth gym sports as needed.

  • Assist in providing customer service to internal and external customers; assist customers with registration; answer phones, take messages, and provide information to the public.

  • Greet customers at multiple sites and record facility attendance; assist with preparing reports, records, roll sheets, award lists, and rosters.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities in the recreation program to which assigned is qualifying.

Knowledge of: basic principles relating to recreational leadership, early childhood development and/or education techniques, and customer service.

Ability to:

  • Assist in planning, implementing, and coordinating assigned recreational program operations and activities.

  • Assist in planning and preparing recreational activities, reports, and other related program materials.

  • Understand the organization and operation of recreational programs and facilities necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.

  • Understand, apply and explain facility use policies and procedures.

  • Deescalate conflict.

  • Provide courteous assistance to facility patrons.

  • Lift and move tables and chairs, and arrange facilities for community events and/or meetings.

  • Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.

  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.

  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.

  • Foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

License/Certification Required:Certain positions may require possession of a valid California Driver's License by date of appointment. Positions assigned to certain programs may also require CPR certification. Must be able to obtain a work permit prior to appointment if under the age of 18.

Note: Possession of a current (less than two years) tuberculosis clearance slip by date of appointment. Fingerprinting at the time of hire is a state-mandated requirement for all employees having direct contact with minors.

This is a part-time position usually averaging 15-20 hours per week. A minimum number of hours is not guaranteed.
