Job Skills / Requirements

The Cleaner is responsible for the cleaning of and the maintenance within the assigned location to ensure a clean and sanitary environment for our clients. The Cleaner will keep premises of office building or other commercial or institutional building in clean and orderly condition by performing the following job responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Empty trash and recycling

  • Dust, wipe and spot clean all surfaces

  • Vacuum, mop, and wet mop designated areas

  • Clean entire restroom by utilizing disinfectants and bathroom cleaners, restock restroom supplies as needed, remove trash, clean fixtures, mirrors, and dispensers, sweep and/or wet mop floors

  • Includes but not limited to hand tools, motorized equipment, chemical and cleaning utensils to address specific work assignments

  • Ensure all lights are on/off and appropriate doors are locked when leaving an area

  • Keep closets clean, neat and orderly

  • Alert to public safety and security concerns. Notifies responsible agencies and/or leadership and supports the outcome

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned by Supervisor and/or Manager


  • 1 year of cleaning experience, preferred

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred

  • Must be able to meet physical requirements of position

The primary responsibilities include assisting the Shellfish Hatchery Manager in the operation of the RWU Luther H. Blount Shellfish Hatchery and associated nursery facilities for bivalve shellfish. Also works with the Assistant Professor of Biology in performing work. The hatchery produces seed oysters, quahogs, and other bivalve mollusks for student training, funded research projects and other public and private aquaculture efforts in the region. Shellfish Hatchery & Greenhouse Operations: * Assist in the operation of the hatchery to meet annual shellfish production goals. * Monitor and assist in the maintenance of shellfish seawater systems. * Clean shellfish culturing and seawater systems; clean and repair tanks. * Assist with preparing solutions, ordering supplies, feeding, spawning and culturing shellfish larvae/post-set. * Assist the hatchery manager in coordinating with the microalgae manager in coordinating nutrition/algae needs of cultured shellfish. * Maintain a safe and secure work environment. * Maintain accurate and organized records. Supervise Students: * Assist in training student assistants in proper hatchery techniques. * Supervise student assistants in hatchery production. * Provide educational outreach opportunities to visiting groups when possible. Shellfish Nursery Operations: * Work with Shellfish Field and Extension Technician and other CEED Staff to ensure the proper nursery grow-out phase for hatchery produced shellfish seed. This may include the maintenance and operation of static tank systems and/or dock-side upwellers. This is a part-time temporary position. Requirements: * Bachelor's degree in marine biology or related field and have knowledge of shellfish biology, ecology, field sampling techniques and aquaculture methodology. * Excellent interpersonal skills. * Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required. * Working knowledge of bivalve hatchery operations, including micro algae culture, brood stock conditioning and spawning, larval culture of bivalve mollusks, bivalve metamorphosis, and nursery culture of oyster, quahog and other bivalve mollusks. Excellent organizational skills to manage time to meet workload and deadline demands. * Able to work independently while maintaining consistent and frequent communication with supervisors. * Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends as needed. * Proficient in MS Office programs with the ability to create and manipulate data sets. Preferred Qualifications * Experience in a commercial or research shellfish hatchery. * Carpentry and plumbing skills * Supervisory experience of a team of technicians and/or students in the field and/or laboratory.
