JOB DESCRIPTION

General Music Teacher

Position Code:

School: Saluda Elementary

FLSA: Exempt

Reports to: Principal

Supervises: NA

Job Summary: Direct all general music classes and activities involving assigned schools, as well as manage budgeted monies allocated to the general music program in accordance with procedures established by school and Board Policy.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan developmentally appropriate lessons and learning activities that address the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS). Appropriate planning includes:

  • Develop a yearly plan/pacing cart aligned to the NCSCS.

  • Design unit plans and lesson plans that support the yearly plan.

  • Prepare clear lesson plans and instructions for substitutes.

  • Deliver well-organized, well-connected, smoothly flowing lessons that require active student participation and that all students understand.

  • Effectively manage student behavior:

  • Develop, teach, and implement a classroom management/student behavior plan.

  • Create a "respect for all" environment in the classroom and throughout the school.

  • Monitor student behavior throughout the day: classroom, class changes, lunch, and recess.

  • Administer consistent, appropriate interventions for student misbehavior.

  • Maintain teacher and student dignity at all times.

  • Realize that student behavior issues are additional opportunities to teach a child.

  • Maintain inventory of all instruments and equipment.

  • Submit all purchase orders to the Principal for approval.

  • Monitor, maintain, and develop a music library.

  • Work cooperatively with school Principals and PTA organizations in showcasing student work.

  • Use assessment as an integral element in instruction. Check student work and provide feedback in a timely manner.

  • Be knowledgeable of and use current technologies in planning, communications, and instruction.

  • Work cooperatively with all staff members and consistently maintain a professional attitude.

  • Make parent contacts an important element in the overall learning experience.

  • Maintain accurate records and submit reports and other information in a timely manner.

  • Perform all assigned non-instructional duties.

  • Understand and comply with laws and policies.

  • Develop a plan for professional growth and participate in staff development activities.

  • Maintain high performance expectations for all students.

  • Attend all meetings:

  • Faculty

  • Team meetings

  • Staff Development

  • Others as required


  1. Serve as a positive representative of the school in the community.

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • Have or be eligible for NC licensure in area of assignment.

  • Ability to work effectively with the community.

  • Communication and technology skills

  • Willingness to work cooperatively with arts related organizations within the community.

Terms of Employment: 10 months - Teacher Salary Scale

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal(s) and Instrumental Music Coordinator.
