Position Information

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

One-year experience, NCTMB qualification preferred, AMTA membership preferred.

Position Summary

This is a professional licensed Massage Therapy position that provides individualized therapeutic and medical massage to eligible patients of the University Health Center. This includes obtaining a brief history, developing a treatment plan of care, and treating utilizing the appropriate massage techniques for the clients' physical, psychosocial, cultural, and age-related needs. The Massage Therapist provides education and referral as needed and documents history, treatment plan, and services rendered. The Massage Therapist works closely with physical therapy staff, patients and their families. Interacts with other department and clinic managers, nursing staff, clinician staff, clinic lead physicians, and administrative staff as well. This position reports directly to and is supervised by the Physical Therapy Operations Coordinator. The Physical Therapy Department Manager also provides clinical oversight.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Appropriate clinical skills, professional presentation to meet the demands of patient care, motivational interviewing skills, positive communication with patients, delivery of the appropriate treatment plan to meet patient needs, and ability to collaborate with other therapists, medical providers, and staff.

Physical Demands

  • Repetitive stand, bend, stoop, sit, manipulate patient limbs and position, lift, reach, etc.

  • Active throughout the 8 hours work day to include typical busy medical office/clinic demands, including walking, standing, sitting, reaching, typing, bending, talking, listening, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 20 pounds.

Patient Care:

  • Practices safe, effective, and appropriate Massage Therapy care in accordance with UHC protocols and policies and the Georgia State Board of Massage Therapy regulations.

  • Evaluates and treats patients in accordance with appropriate Massage Therapy practice.

  • Determines needs for care with consideration for age-specific, activity, functional needs, and patient goals.

  • Provides individualized education and treatment plans for each patient and provides ongoing care and support to patients as needed.

  • Provides care using clinically appropriate therapeutic interventions to ensure the patient's ongoing improvement, return to function and patient goal acquisition.

  • Documents encounters thoroughly in a concise, timely, detailed, and informative manner using electronic medical record.

  • Seeks to deliver care and education to develop therapeutic alliance, patient resilience and empowerment, and promotion/maintenance of health, fitness and wellness.

  • Consults with prescribing medical provider, other members of care team, and/or department manager appropriately and as needed.

Percentage of time 70 Duties/Responsibilities

Patient Education:

  • Provides age appropriate and condition specific education to patients, student groups on campus, and other groups on topics including massage therapy, pain, ergonomics, relaxation, integrative wellness, and other topics promoting health and wellness.

  • Supports a learning environment for patients that foster achievement of defined individual rehabilitation goals.

  • Provides information on injury prevention as part of treatment plan.

  • Ensures that appropriate patient education materials are readily available.

  • Uses contacts with students as an opportunity for health promotion and education.

  • Utilizes secure messaging and approved education handouts to assist with patient education.

  • Documents education provided.

Percentage of time 15 Duties/Responsibilities

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Communicates with and integrates into a team.

  • Facilitates a healthy work environment that is respectful, collaborative, keeps colleagues accountable, and seeks to build others up for the betterment of the department and organization.

  • Orients new Massage Therapy and Physical Therapy staff.

  • Participates in process improvement. Attends and participates in committee and staff meetings.

  • Advises UHC clinical staff on patient care management, techniques, treatment options, therapy recommendations, and patient care in a collaborative treatment model.

  • Leads by example with a strong work ethic and mission to provide excellence in care and devotion to helping internal and external customers.

  • Will act on behalf of the department during the absence of the Manager.

  • Contributes to culture of service excellence.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

  • Obtains appropriate continuing education credits as a requirement in maintaining license and professional certifications.

  • Active engagement and participation in professional development opportunities in department and organization (eg: lunch-n-learns, research article review/discussion, group/department Massage and Physical Therapy staff learning and practice of skills/techniques/exam/treatments, peer reviews).
