Overview
The University of Pittsburgh School of Computing and Information seeks exceptional candidates for a Part-Time Instructor position. We are looking for individuals to teach a first-year seminar course: CMPINF 0001 SCI First Year Seminar. This position is outside of the tenure stream and has a duration of one term. CMPINF 0001 is a one-credit course that meets synchronously, in person, once per week in the fall semester. Each class has between 17-25 students.
Responsibilities
In addition to teaching weekly classes, instructors will be required to set up and monitor a Canvas page, respond to student emails in a timely manner, grade weekly assignments, and provide early progress reports, midterm, and final grades in Peoplesoft. Prepared course material will be provided; instructors will collaborate with the advising team to deliver content related to advising expectations and enrollment.
Required Qualifications
Hold a minimum of a baccalaureate degree by the start of the position
Examples include (but are not limited to) degrees in Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Counseling
Currently employed at the University of Pittsburgh
Direct experience at Pitt working in areas such as student success, advising, career services, student/employer relations, student records, student recruitment, student admissions, student counseling, student affairs, etc.
Having worked one-on-one with students at Pitt in areas such as career services, transitioning from high school to college, student success, advising, counseling, tutoring, advocacy, assisting with registration, and policy and procedural issues.
Having taught students in group settings in the same areas as indicated above, either in individual workshops, multiple-session workshops, or non-credit or for-credit courses.
Knowledge of Pitt and SCI resources for students
Prior experience in presenting in front of groups of people
Have approval from your supervisor to serve as a PTI, as some of the responsibilities will occur during business hours
Agreements about whether participating in this course constitutes fulfillment of your current job duties or not must be made with your supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of or experience in teaching introductory student-facing seminars that are parallel to or equivalent to the CMPINF 0001 SCI First-Year Seminar
Knowledge of or experience in student development
Currently employed in a student-facing role, preferably involving undergrads as they initially transition from high school to college
