Position Summary

Fremont International Academy is the first non-boundary magnet within Battle Creek Public Schools, focusing on world cultures and international mindedness through the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework. We seek to inspire students beyond the classroom to become lifelong learners and global citizens of the 21st Century by developing their talents in a multilingual environment. The school currently serves 340 students up to Grade 5. We are searching for an instructional coach for educators who are lifelong learners and maintain a constant growth mindset, both for their individual practice as well as the students they serve. This position will consist of a part-time assignment as an IB Instructional Coach. As the IB instructional coach, it is imperative to support teachers at Fremont International Academy in creating an inquiry based, dynamic, engaging, student-led environment for teaching and learning. With teachers as the facilitator, students are provided opportunities to practice and demonstrate thoughtful and ethical behavior and skills grounded in the International Baccalaureate aims and objectives.

Position Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • The PYP IB Instructional Coach ensures the continuity of teaching expectations of the programme through supporting, modeling and coaching transdisciplinary program of inquiry, unit planners, daily planners, policy documents, guidelines for verification and evaluation, and continuum initiatives.

  • A vital aspect of a PYP IB Instructional Coach's role is collaborative planning with all teachers. This requires a deep understanding of what constitutes a good collaborative learning team with its variety of roles

  • The PYP IB Instructional Coach is responsible for coaching and the induction into PYP for new faculty and staff and be part of the collaborative decision making regarding PD initiatives within the school.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assume responsibility for the implementation of the PYP curriculum within the spirit of the school's mission statement

  • Serve as a member of the school's Leadership Team helping to develop the strategic plan, leading the accreditation and review processes

  • Initiate and facilitate professional training programs that will enable the teaching staff to successfully introduce and develop the IB programs in their classroom successfully; the trainings will include professional learning communities, interdisciplinary unit development, and current pedagogy and assessment practices

  • Provide instructional leadership to individual teachers through instructional coaching, mentoring, peer support, and team-teaching opportunities

  • Ensure PYP requirements are met by developing transdisciplinary units, POI revisions, scope and sequence (pacing) documentation, assessment documentation, Exhibition guidelines

  • Attend parent, grade level and program meetings, host informational sessions, attend and lead job-a-likes, and visit partnering schools

  • Assist in recruiting and retaining of students by attending recruitment fairs and conducting open presentations and tours

  • Facilitate presentations, productions, events and/or activities as appropriate that showcase student learning and achievement (specific expectations to be detailed during the interview process) Additional duties as assigned by the Principal.

  • Network with BCPS instructional coaches to share best practices and participate fully in ongoing professional development to extend literacy, mathematics and instructional competencies in all content areas

  • Participate in all school-based teams as directed, including Instructional Leadership Teams, Professional Learning Communities, Student Success Teams, Positive School Experience Teams, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred

  • Must hold a valid Michigan Elementary Teacher's License and have a minimum of 3 years of successful teaching (rated effective or highly effective).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Experience teaching and training in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) or previous experience as an IB coordinator preferre

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Contract: 188 Days (.5 FTE - Part Time)
