Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the position of Head Coach is responsible for recruiting student athletes; planning/coordinating practices and games; setting high standards for academic and athletic success; fundraising for athletic team; and evaluating the Virginia Peninsula Community College athletic teams that are participating at the competitive and/or National Junior College Athletic Association level. This position is expected to work collaboratively with the Director of Athletics to increase opportunities for athletic engagement outside of the classroom for students. The primary responsibility of this Head Coach is to prepare students for athletic and academic success on the field/court of competition and in the classroom. Makes decisions with approval/confirmation from the Director of Athletics.
Duties and responsibilities:
Demonstrated Knowledge of Recruiting, Coaching, and Teaching, Student-Athletes
Identify potential students-athletes to be recruited to participate in competitive and NJCAA sports and inform/notify the Athletics Director to initiate the recruitment process.
Evaluate and assess potential student-athletes to be recruited to participate in competitive and NJCAA sports.
Develops relationships with high school athletic departments and community members to seek recommendations for potential student-athletes.
Seeks approval from Director of Athletics in scheduling practices and games.
Coordinates, teaches, and executes skills, drills, and strategies for designated practices
Communicates game day strategies for potential results to win scheduled games
Works with Director of Athletics in scheduling and monitoring mandatory study halls for identified student-athletes to proactively address and resolve issues related to academic eligibility
Abides by all academic eligibility compliance guidelines and game day rules set forth by the NJCAA
Attend mandated NJCAA, VPCC, and VCCS meetings as mandated by the Athletics Director
Management of Game Day Operations and Results/Statistics
Coordinate with VPCC Director of Athletics and Athletic Operations Assistant as well as the AD/Athletic Facility Manager for off campus locations for preparation of fields for scheduled home games.
Manages and evaluates athletic uniforms, equipment/supplies need and completes year-end inventory of all uniforms, equipment, and supplies, Responsible for distribution and collection of all supplies.
Ensures scores and statistics are input promptly after each scheduled game along with game highlights/summary to enable the designated staff to update the college and NJCAA/Region X athletics websites, appropriate media outlets and social media networking sites.
Abides by all academic eligibility compliance guidelines and game day rules set forth by the NJCAA.
Ensures the Department of Athletics is immediately notified of all ejections or any reprimands that occur at any athletic events.
Ensures all assistant coaches, student-athletes, and managers foster a positive image of sportsmanship for the Department of Athletics, Virginia Peninsula CC/VCCS, and the NJCAA/Region 10
Demonstrates a positive work ethic and positive image of sportsmanship to the student athletes, competitors, and co-workers.
Student Development
Ensures student-athlete/team are attending and actively participating in college programs and community service activities scheduled by the Department of Athletics.
Inform student-athletes of additional athletic fees required to participate.
Initiate and Maintain documentation on each student athlete in the respective sport.
Community Engagement/Fundraising
Ability to connect with the community in order to engage potential student athletes.
Actively participate in and/or coordinate fundraising events/programs to generate additional funding for the Athletics Department.
Conduct, organize, and Facilitate Camps for recruits or youth while using the VPCC branding guide and resources to engage the community.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Excellent organizational, communication and leadership skills, whether dealing with individuals or groups and an ability to work well with different constituents.Ability to effectively analyze and teach the fundamental skills and strategies of the sport.
Ability to successfully motivate all associated with the team.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Positive attitude towards the college and its intercollegiate programs is essential.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Valid Driver's License and Ability to Drive & Maintain School Vehicles
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification required for entry into position:
Expertise in the sport having collegiate coaching and/or playing experience.
Knowledge of and compliance with the NJCAA mission and philosophies (preferred).
Successful recruiting and student retention experience (preferred).
Must be CPR and First Aid/AED certified or willing to obtain.
