Statement of Job:

The University of Southern Maine's Social and Behavioral Sciences Department invites applications for a part-time faculty opening for our Fall 2024 semester, beginning September 3, 2024.

Responsibilities of Part Time Faculty include developing a course syllabus and adhering to the corresponding schedule of course content; responding to student inquiries of course material, both during class time and over email; administering course assignments and/or exams; and grading student coursework in a timely manner.

Along with a variety of Mental Health Rehabilitation Courses (MHRT/C) and child-oriented counseling courses, we are also seeking instructor(s) to teach the following courses:

Deviance and Social Control (SBS 300): This course provides a forum to examine deviance and social control from sociological, psychological, ecological, environmental and cross-cultural (anthropological) perspectives, examining contested definitions of deviance, and different theories about deviance and social control. The course investigates the interrelationships of culture, power, identity formation and social change.

We will explore portrayals of deviance and social control in literature, film, and popular culture. Students challenge their critical thinking skills and will achieve a higher level of understanding about the relative notion of deviance, including how it relates to population size, and the nature(s) and type(s) of social control.

Applied Social and Public Policy (SBS 430): A review of contemporary social policy alternatives and an examination of social policy making processes at both the macro- and micro-levels. The course combines service learning or community engagement with action research strategies in an Applied Social Policy project with a community-based organization or governmental agency. Recommended to be taken in a student's final semesters.

Social and Behavioral Sciences Internship Experience (SBS 447): All students in the SBS majors are required, as part of their program, to do a 3-credit hour internship, which consists of 120 hours of work at the work site (about 10 to 12 hours a week) and completion of several online assignments. Some students may elect up to 6 hours after seeking approval from their faculty advisors. With the assistance of their faculty advisor, current course instructor, and the administrative specialist, students identify an organization that will enable them to evaluate potential career opportunities.

Designed to enhance students' understanding of the psychosocial and cultural influences shaping individual lives and social institutions, the University of Southern Maine's Social and Behavioral Sciences Program interweaves interdisciplinary courses in liberal arts with foundational SBS courses and a variety of courses providing more specific tools of the trade. Required courses such as Toward a Global Ethics, Deviance and Social Control, and Applied Social and Public Policy reinforce appreciation of the impact of societal influences.

Students expand upon this knowledge through choices made from an extensive array of elective courses. Many students focus their choice of electives thematically, pursuing a concentration in Counseling or Public Health, or a minor or certificate in Public Health or Regulatory Ethics.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. In addition, USM employees can use their USM Card to access the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center(s). USM also offers part-time faculty the opportunity for development frequently through our Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD) and the chance to get an online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other developmental opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.
