The Setnor School of Music within The College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a Part-time Instructor to teach MUE 310/610 Field Experience in Music Education, a one- to two-credit hour course during the Fall and Spring semesters, 2024-25.

Orientation to school settings: organization, services, guidance, goals, evaluation. Observations and supervised teaching experiences in music at elementary/secondary levels. Experiences coordinated with music education courses in sophomore/junior years and graduate teacher preparation program. Additional work required of graduate students.

Qualifications

Relevant academic credentials or professional experience including:

  • Comprehensive understanding of music teaching and learning in public schools, particularly elementary and secondary.

  • A record of outstanding public-school teaching and knowledge regarding music instruction at the general, choral, and instrumental settings as well as inclusion of students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to equity for all students and teaching approaches that are tailored to include all students in the learning process.

  • Excellent connections and working relationships with local public-school teachers required.

  • A doctorate degree in music education is desirable; ABD candidates will also be considered. Master's degree in music education with New York State Music k-12 teaching certification required.

  • The candidate must demonstrate understanding of various teaching methodologies in music, demands of public-school ensemble scheduling, task analysis, and ability to mentor prospective music educators.

  • Experience in leading engaging and dynamic classrooms, student learning achievement in the public-school settings, classroom management and discipline, assessment, lesson planning, and scope and sequence.

  • Prior college teaching experience strongly preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

The candidate should have strong attention to detail, knowledge of course content, demonstrated professional experience and/or prior public-school teaching experience, as well as the ability to relate well in a classroom and one-on-one environment with college-level students.

Preference will be given to applicants who could potentially fulfill multiple positions within the Setnor School of Music.

Responsibilities

Being present and instructing weekly class meetings during Fall and Spring semesters as indicated below:

  • Fall and Spring Fridays: 8:00 AM - 10:20 AM

In addition:

  • Developing and/or updating a class syllabus.

  • Preparation of lectures, projects or other student assignments.

  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.

  • Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.

  • Meeting all designated class periods.

  • If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency, you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute.

  • You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class.

  • Submitting completed mid-semester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations.

  • Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner.

  • Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.

  • Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
