The El Camino Community College District is now accepting applications to establish a pool of instructors to teach American Sign Language (ASL) courses. Anticipated assignments for the 2024 fall semester include advanced ASL and college level ASL courses at area high schools.

Classroom assignment consists of lesson plans, instruction, and evaluation of students based on specific course objectives. Update syllabi; collaborate with discipline faculty on a regular basis to assess and revise curriculum and measurable student performance indicators for each course. Assignments may include teaching courses during day and evening hours.

Faculty job responsibilities include the assessment of learning outcomes to improve teaching and learning in achieving El Camino College's mission of institutional effectiveness, quality educational programs, and vibrant student support services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's degree and six (6) years experience teaching American Sign Language; OR

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years experience teaching American Sign Language; OR

The equivalent

  • Candidates not possessing the required qualification(s) as stated on this announcement must complete the Request For Equivalency Form as part of the application process to explain in detail how their qualifications are equivalent to those above; OR

Valid California community college instructor credential in appropriate subject issued prior to July 1, 1990 (per California Education Code 87355); AND

Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and of individuals with disabilities.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of ASL grammatical structure.

Two years of teaching American Sign Language.

Ability to communicate with both deaf and hearing individuals.

Experience and working knowledge of learning styles and various modes of teaching manual communication.

Competencies related to: curriculum & course development; teaching & learning theory; information resources & evaluating student outcomes; and, assisting student to develop critical thinking skills.

Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing with a diverse campus community.

Currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility and subject matter.

Ability to work effectively and professionally with colleagues and members of the campus community.

Familiarity with, willingness and ability to use multiple teaching methods including computer based learning.

Ability and enthusiasm to use teaching methods that engage students and encourage them to be motivated self-learners.

Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certified or equivalent; or a member of or participation in the American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA).

SALARY:

Part-time faculty are compensated on a semester basis according to the number of class hours assigned per semester and on cumulative semesters of instruction for the District. The beginning rate $105.27 - $134.39 (lecture), $79.79 - $101.83 (lab), per hour depending on education and experience.

This is a part-time position beginning August 2024. A teaching demonstration will be required during the interview process.
