Position Information:

Health Occupations, Physical Education and Business is a vital academic division at Shoreline Community College. The Health Occupations area offers degrees and certifications in Dental Hygiene, Health Care Information, Medical Lab Technology and Nursing. This position reports directly to the Medical Lab Technology Director.   Positions in this field teach and/or assist with courses taught primarily in the Phlebotomy program.  Responsibilities will include supervising and instructing in classroom and clinical areas and assisting in the development and scheduling of clinical externships for students.

Faculty at Shoreline will have an array of students from differing programs in their classroom, including professional technical and university transfers. Shoreline seeks a candidate that can identify and mitigate the barriers to success that many students face and be passionate about creating an equitable learning environment that supports success for all students.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Teach Phlebotomy Program courses online and in-person lectures/labs

  • Supervise students in practicum rotations

  • Review and update curriculum for Medical Lab Technology and Phlebotomy courses

Required Education and Experience

  • Educational qualifications related to Phlebotomist Certification through the Washington State Department of Health

  • AA degree, AAS degree, or Bachelor's degree

  • Experience teaching/training adults in a Higher Education or other setting

  • Three years of related professional experience in a clinical laboratory or phlebotomy

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems and other appropriate instructional technology

  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness

  • Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of Phlebotomy

  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience with teaching and developing coursework online

  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College

  • Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities

  • Developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently

  • Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

Physical Work Environment:  

The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online) operations, with the option for some assignments to be completed in an online environment based on program or area needs. When remote (online) instruction is available, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Faculty typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment.

Terms of Employment & Salary:

This is a part-time, non-tenured, quarter-to-quarter assignment.  Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with educational preparation. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
