Friends of the National Zoo is seeking a part time educator to conduct education programs that meet the missions of Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) and Smithsonians National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. The part time educator will contribute to a flexible and collaborative department that thrives on teamwork, innovation, and delivering mission-driven education and volunteer programming.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as weekend Birthday Party Lead by engaging and educating a diverse audience of birthday party participants. Create positive interactions throughout the program. Set-up, break-down, and restock supplies

  • Conduct on-site school programming by leading established classroom and tour-based programs for K-8th grade. Provide program feedback and recommendations to improve and grow school programming. Assist with curriculum research and development and education program evaluation

  • Provide support for Safari Day Camp by organizing camp supplies, creating registration reports, assisting with dismissal, before care, and after care, and teaching a week or more of camp

  • Support the development and implementation of educational content and activities for public engagement programs, such as power demo days, Earth Day, etc.

  • Assist with administrative, programmatic, and logistical support of education programs

  • In conjunction with education team members, contribute to the short term and long term strategic plan goals for the department and its programs

  • Represent NZP and FONZ internally and externally as an acknowledged leader in environmental and conservation education

  • Support other department-wide initiatives in education and volunteer programming

  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • College degree required; One of year of experience in formal or information education

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks

  • Must be flexible and adaptable with solid problem solving skills

  • Works well independently as well as in teams

  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and ability to quickly become proficient in web-based systems

  • Customer service oriented and the ability to interact with positively with FONZ team members and the public

  • Must be comfortable actively working outside in all weather

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds

  • Valid drivers license

  • 1st Aid/CPR/AED certified or the ability to be certified prior to employment

  • Must be able to work weekends and some evenings

Possesses a broader knowledge of banking policies and procedures. Develops expertise in all types of branch transactions including, but not limited to foreign exchange, night deposits, ATM balancing and more in-depth system knowledge. Individuals in this position are trained and rewarded for identifying client needs and making appropriate referrals. Qualifications Basic Requirements: * High school diploma or equivalent. * Six months experience as a Teller at SunTrust Bank, or one year experience at a comparable financial institution, or one and a half years retail service and sales experience. * Basic math and numeric sequencing aptitude. * Willing and able to follow instructions and work under established guidelines. Preferred Requirements: * One year of experience as a Teller and/or completion of Core and Intermediate STU Curriculum Training as well as any corresponding Teller coursework. * Demonstrated ability to uncover referral opportunities. * Knowledge of advanced or complex branch transactions.
