Job Summary:

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for direction and overall supervision of a group of early childhood students. The Assistant Teacher performs activities that ensure the safety, involvement, and creativity of each student. The Assistant Teacher works cooperatively with the Director/Teacher to discuss and aide in the implementation of daily plans in accordance with the current curriculum and EMU standards.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with teaching team in all activities, including but not limited to: housekeeping, record keeping, meal service, toilet needs.

  • Share responsibility in the preparation of Daily Plans and the preparation of teaching materials.

  • Oversee daily small-group activities for an assigned group of children, sharing responsibility for large-group activities and using appropriate adult/child interactions strategies with all children.

  • Assume responsibility for a classroom at any given time.

  • Collects required anecdotes and information for required ongoing assessment.

  • Provide coverage for breaks for other staff members.

  • Supervise daily lunch and playground activities.

  • Promote individualized attention for children by freeing teachers from routine duties.

  • Manage cleanliness, order and availability of classroom materials.

  • Ensure all center policies and state licensing and health regulations are met.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Ability to use discretion in communications with parents in the Director/Teachers' absence.

  • Ability to move and react quickly and to handle emergencies effectively.

  • Ability to abide by all rules and regulations applicable to workers of the center.

  • Ability to accept changes in schedules, environment, etc.

  • Acquire knowledge of the current curriculum and implement the curriculum practices in the classroom.

  • Good memory skills for recalling dates, people, events, and records in order to retrieve information for reports and files.

  • Ability to problem solve and demonstrate solutions-oriented skills.

  • Interpersonal skills for establishing positive relationships and communicating with children, staff, administration, parents, and members of the community.

  • Ability to work outside of normal scheduled hours.

Education and Experience:

A bachelor's degree in early childhood education or related field is preferred. High school diploma required. Specific experience in early childhood education within a developmental-interactionist framework preferred. Must have a clear TB evaluation and possess a valid driver's license.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.
