Part-Time Aquatics Senior Lifeguard

Job Description

The City of Burlington's Recreation & Parks Department is seeking capable swimmers to become senior lifeguard at Burlington Aquatic facilities. Lifeguard shifts vary and are flexible in nature. Hours vary and are available seven days a week throughout the year. Lifeguards capable of working daytime shifts on weekdays are in high demand during the school year.

This position is responsible for providing public safety by supervising the safe use of public aquatics facilities by patrons. The position enforces safety regulations in a skilled, professional, and friendly manner. Lifeguards are also responsible for general pool and facility maintenance, cleaning, and other related duties as assigned. Participation in mandatory in-service training is a requirement of the position.

Examples of Duties

• Assist in the enforcement of rules and regulations set for the City pool facility assigned, monitor activities and operations.

• Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning rules, regulations, policies, and aquatic programming; respond to complaints and forward to appropriate staff.

• Enforce pool rules and regulations; explain and post rules where they are visible to the public and staff; maintain order and discipline in and around the facility.

• Respond to and assist with emergencies occurring in or around the facility quickly and effectively; keep order and discipline with the public during emergencies; administer First Aid and CPR as needed and perform appropriate rescues when necessary.

• Perform basic cleaning duties to include sweeping, mopping, stocking restrooms, sanitizing, picking up trash, skimming pool, and vacuuming pool.

• Identify possible hazards through daily inspection of all equipment and supplies; report all findings from all inspections to the appropriate supervisor or staff.

• Assist with the filing of written records by composing reports as scheduled; submit reports to appropriate staff by the time requested.

• Participate in continuing education and training by attending all in-service training sessions and performing individual and group physical fitness drills.

• Promote water safety awareness by consistently presenting a professional attitude through positive public relations, courtesy, and a general concern for the public.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Aquatic safety principles, rules, regulations, and emergency action procedures.

• Proper use and maintenance of safety and rescue equipment.

• Methods and techniques of aquatic facility maintenance and operations.

• Policies for the County Parks department and pool facility.

• Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations pertaining to aquatic and recreational facilities.

Ability to:

• Maintain a cooperative demeanor and positive attitude while working with the public.

• Use good decision-making skills in all situations.

• Apply First Aid, CPR and AED skills, techniques, and procedures effectively.

• Perform basic rescue techniques and emergency procedures learned in training.

• Respond with courtesy and tact to public concerns and complaints.

• Communicate and interact effectively with youth, adults, and senior citizens.

• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

• Enforce facility rules with firmness and tact.

• Work various shifts as assigned.

MinimumQualifications

• Reliable transportation.

• Must be 16 years of age or older.

• American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification with CPR PRO

• Water Safety Instructor Certificate(WSI),Lifeguard Instructor Certificate(LGI), Certified pool operator(CPO) or two years of lifeguard experience
