Job Description:

Under the direction of a full-time faculty member and/or the 3D Design/Sculpture Coordinator, or assigned supervisor or manager, assist in the instructional program by performing a variety of work (technical and maintenance) in an active 3D Design/Sculpture studio environment. This position is dependent on classes running within the discipline.

The 3D Design/Sculpture Studio Lab Technician oversees a multi-faceted instructional studio dedicated to the 3D Design/Sculpture discipline and must possess adequate technical and/or academic training and experience in this specific field. Under the direction of an assigned full-time faculty member or supervisor, the 3D Design/Sculpture Studio Lab Technician often works independently to accomplish tasks while also communicating and working with the full-time faculty member or supervisor and students to ensure that a safe and productive working environment is maintained.

Essential Duties:

Oversee the operation and maintenance of the 3D Design/Sculpture facilities (wood shop, metal shop, 3D printing space) ensuring a safe, clean, and orderly working environment is maintained; train and provide work direction to instructional assistants and student assistants.

Advise students in the handling, care, and security of art and supplies.

Advise students in the proper operation and use of sculpture equipment, tools, and materials.

Assemble, maintain, and (when feasible) repair 3D Design/Sculpture equipment.

Assist students in understanding and applying basic principles of art.

Assist faculty, students, and staff in the proper use of facilities, equipment, materials, and supplies common to the 3D Design/Sculpture facilities ensuring that safety and security procedures are appropriately observed.

When needed, greet visitors, conduct group tours, and answer questions about the 3D Design/Sculpture courses and related events.

Provide orientation to students, volunteers, instructors, and staff in the operation of the sculpture facilities.

Work with supervisor to create purchase orders; and inventory and store received supplies and equipment.

Review and complete Safety Data Sheets (SDS), as appropriate.

Provide technical assistance for equipment and schedule repairs of equipment.

Assist with coordinating instructional supplies and tools issued to students.

Check, replace, adjust, and maintain equipment, such as: replacing a broken band saw blade or nozzle for a 3D printer, etc.; make regular visual and operational checks of studio space and equipment."

Prepare materials for instructor demonstration or for use by students.

Requirements:

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: satisfactory completion of 15 semester units of courses related to sculpture or studio art and/or two years of successful work experience in a wood and/or metal and/or fabrication shop/maker's space in an academic or industry setting. Experience with utilizing the current school learning platform. (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) Experience working in a college or university 3D Design/Sculpture studio is desirable.

Contemporary and traditional sculptural processes, materials, uses, and characteristics.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Instructional methods and techniques associated with 3D Design/Sculpture along with safety and security regulations pertaining to relevant equipment and processes including hand tools and various fabrication technologies.

Organization and technical aspects of the presentation of artwork.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Work cooperatively with others.

Lift objects up to 50 pounds.

Relate effectively with people from varied backgrounds and points of view.

Work independently with little direction.

Will occasionally require some physical exertion, stamina, and flexibility.
