The A Side: A Day in The Life

The EMI Archive Trust holds one of the largest collections of sound recordings in the world.

It was set up in 1996 to preserve the history of music, dating back to 1897 and encompassing an extraordinary journey through music, technology and British history starting with EMI's precursor, the Gramophone Company. The Trust also preserves artefacts associated with the company's significant achievements in electrical engineering including television, radar, and medicine.

Our strategic aims focus on public access, education programmes, community projects, content creation and extended relationships with the leading museums and exhibitors globally. The Trust regularly hosts renowned scholars, authors, researchers, and film or television producers.

We are looking for a Part Time Collections Management Officer who is passionate about archives and collections, to join our team to help unlock our historic record disc collection in an inventory project. This position requires someone to plan and deliver a high-level inventory of the EMI Archive Trust early record disc collection dating back to 1897. The EMI Archive Trust are an ambitious team with a reputation for delivering high profile partnership projects. We want to continue to build and develop our collections, increasing access and collaborate with diverse communities.

As part of the team you will contribute to one of the first major initiatives to help us understand, unlock and preserve the cultural heritage of the EMI Archive Trust for future generations.

In this position you will be required to work 3 days per week.

The B Side: Skills & Experience

Be Organised

  • Applying Unique identifier (UID) stickers to each disc sleeve

  • Listing each UID and location against respective disc numbers in a spreadsheet

  • Repacking and marking some of the collection, as required.

Be Collaborative

  • Liaising with technical support to harvest recording data from the Gramophone Company Discography (https://www.emiarchivetrust.org/collection/discography/) and archives in-house legacy database, adding it to spreadsheet data

Be Innovative

  • Assessment and development of optimal working methodology, from a range of available options

  • Flexible, positive attitude and ability to work independently and on own initiative.

Be Strategic

  • Planning: Setting and reporting against targets

Person Specification

Necessary

  • Archival qualification or equivalent experience

  • Knowledge of archival organizational principles

  • Good computer literacy, in particular good knowledge of MS Excel

  • Self-organisational ability

  • Excellent object handling skills

  • Ability to carry out a repetitive task with precision and attention to detail.

  • Delivery of projects against targets

  • Willing to undertake repetitive physical tasks and work at height

  • Must be good working with numbers and be able to interpret and present basic data in a clear way.
