The Parks Department is seeking one individual to join us as our Park Technician (Open Space). This position is scheduled 40 hours per week on average throughout the year, generally Monday

  • Friday, 7:00 a.m.

  • 3:30 p.m. Hours could vary based on weather and department needs.

The Parks Technician (Open Space) performs unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled work in the maintenance of the City and County's undeveloped and developed park areas and cemetery. Their primary responsibilities include performing a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks of moderate difficulty related to the City and County's management of State of Colorado noxious weeds on county properties using herbicides, hand pulling, seed head collection, release of biological control insects, grazing, seeding, mowing, GPS surveying and mechanical removal and providing information and assistance to City and County staff and the public.

Essential Required Tasks/Examples of Duties

General Duties:

  • Performs duties related to the management of State of Colorado noxious weeds on county properties using herbicides, hand pulling, seed head collection, release of biological control insects, grazing, seeding, mowing, GPS surveying and mechanical removal.

  • Performs herbicide application using label guidelines and use application equipment including backpack sprayers, portable sprayer units, and large truck mounted units.

  • Surveys and maintains trail systems using tractors, box scrapers, dump trucks, front end loaders, sprayer units and various hand tools associated.

  • Performs wildlife management operations including Burrowing owl surveys, rodent management, bat and nest box cleaning and construction, and other related wildlife duties.

  • Performs maintenance of structures including fencing, signs, docks, piers, trash receptacles, benches, picnic tables, shelters and other structures.

  • Performs duties for open space events put on by the City and County of Broomfield that occur during and outside of normal working hours.

  • Leads groups in restoration, weed management, trail work, and other open space related maintenance activities.

  • Prepares, develops, and maintains park areas which may include grass and weed mowing and trimming; tree and flower bed planting, watering, and maintenance; aeration; weed eradication; sprinkler irrigation; picking up trash; and snow removal.

  • Assists in set-up for special events and with inspections of contractor work, trash removal, painting, and equipment maintenance and operation.

  • Supervises seasonal maintenance crew and assists supervisor in preparation of performance appraisals; may recommend appropriate disciplinary action.

  • Assists supervisor in training of seasonal maintenance crew.

  • May act as troubleshooter to resolve problems within particular area of assignment.

Minimum Qualifications

Training

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum of one year of responsible experience in open space maintenance. Experience in supervising seasonal employees is preferred.

OR

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment.

New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, driving record check through DMV, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry check and physical.
