Parks & Recreation Specialist (Working Title: Siesta Beach Program Assistant): This is work providing planning, organizing, coordinating, implementing and/or assisting with the activities, programs and events for the County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources department. The advanced level provides administrative oversight and management and operation of recreational or nature-based programs, parks and/or facilities.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug-screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.

Duties:

  • Plans, develops, implements and promotes recreational based programs and also assists others in planning, developing, implementing and promoting recreational based programs centered around a facility or assigned area(s). Assist with division wide special events and coverage of other beaches and water access sites as needed. Assist with summer camps, specialty camps, and other facility needs. Responsible for coordinating maintenance and contractual work to ensure safe, clean parks for customers renting amenities within the park.

  • Schedules and coordinates reservations, groups, instructors, contracts, and registrations utilizing reservation software.

    Assist with creating and distributing promotional information for recreational programs and facilities.

    Provides customer service. Work with neighborhood, youth, and community groups. Assist with volunteers to partner and optimize recreational opportunities for the public.

  • Collect fees and charges for services rendered at Siesta Beach and Water Access Parks, assist with facility rentals, and daily closeouts.

Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of experience in recreational programming or in related area. A valid Florida Driver's License at time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
Recreational programming experience preferred. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP). Money handling and customer service skills preferred.

Job Competencies: Computer skills including Microsoft Office Professional, RecTrac or similar reservation software.

Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with groups and individuals. Ability to work independently and ability to solve problems and develop service improvements. Ability to communicate effectively and in writing.

Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

May use a dolly or have assistance from a team member when moving heavy items.

The main function is planning and oversight of daily maintenance activities and event support for beach locations, natural areas and neighborhood parks. Responsible for safety, contractors, finances, equipment and interaction with upper management to ensure infrastructure maintenance and daily support. Duties: * Organizes/coordinates/schedules daily activities and functions of assigned work crews * Maintains, reviews and summarizes daily activity logs/work orders * Reviews and monitors safety equipment, instructs crews in proper work methods and correct safety procedures * Assigns work crews to emergency operations * Trains and develops staff on utilization of equipment and operations * Facilitates coordination of training for staff * Use of Computer-based software & programs for scheduling, time management and work orders * Interagency cooperation with Florida Department of Law Enforcement Officers, Florida Department of Environmental Protection officials, Sarasota County Sherriff's Officers, other units/core services, local community representatives and City of Sarasota officials * Ensures compliance with county, state and OSHA regulations; coordinates use of external resources/vendors * Assists with monitoring, analyzes/assessing effectiveness and efficiency of all aspects of work performed in house and contractual * Assists with establishing workload priorities to meet deadlines * Responsible for fleet transport and fleet program for beaches * Coordinates and ensures appropriate supply of work material: tracks and maintains store inventories/rolling warehouse * Participates in hiring of staff, performance reviews and disciplinary actions * Participates in staffing and business planning efforts * Assists with special events as necessary * Invoicing/P-Cards/Budget/Financing Minimum Qualifications: A High School Diploma and four (4) years of related experience is required as related to maintenance of athletic fields, open spaces, beaches, neighborhood parks and natural area parks including supervisory experience. An Associate's Degree may be required with two (2) years of experience including supervisor experience. Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Business, Political Science or related field preferred * NRPA Certified Parks and Recreational Professional * Maintenance knowledge of Beaches and Water Access Parks preferred Job Competencies: Knowledge of minor construction, maintenance of beaches and water access parks and environmental stewardship. Basic Microsoft Office computer skills. Proficiency in Maximo, Kronos and MS Outlook. Knowledge of recreation programming, activities, special event permitting and on-site event management. Physical Demands: Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
