Parks- Groundskeeper II

Job Description

Under immediate supervision, the Groundskeeper II landscapes and maintains grounds of property using hand tools, power tools or equipment. Employee typically performs a variety of manual tasks to include any combination of planting, watering, fertilizing, maintain irrigation systems, athletic turf maintenance and minor construction projects.

Job Responsibilities

1.Mixes and sprays or spreads fertilizer, herbicides or insecticides onto shrubs, trees and flowering plants, using hand or automatic sprayers and spreaders.

2.Plants seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, ground covers, trees and shrubs and apply mulch for protection using gardening tools.

3.Follows planned landscaping designs to determine where to plant flowers and foliage.

4.Maintains irrigation systems including winterizing the system and starting them up in the spring and manually watering newly planted vegetation.

5.Maintains turf on athletic fields to higher standard than grass in parks.

6.Provides skills to place specialized equipment, such as portable stage and restrooms for special events.

7.Develops layout plans for special events in city parks.

8.Performs light construction work, such as labor needed to setting forms, minor repairs to buildings, and maintaining comfort structures.

9.Position requires driving and operating motor vehicles and other equipment, such as City truck and large mowers for athletic field maintenance.

10. Assists on other job related assignments when requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements - 1. An accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.

2.This position requires one (1) year as a Groundskeeper. Three (3) years related work experience is preferred.

3.Job requires a valid Texas Class C Drivers License.

4.Must use good judgment and exercise safety procedures.

5.Must be able to learn uses, repair and maintenance of tools.

6.Must maintain a responsible demeanor and a helpful manner.

7.Must be able to learn chemical properties of supplies, how to use, detect, and avoid chemical dangers, and how to dispose of chemical supplies.

8.Must be able to learn how to install portable stage.

9.Must be able to communicate effectively in English.

Physical Requirements

1.Job is generally outdoors performing heavy manual labor under conditions involving extreme heat or cold.

2.Continuous lifting of heavy materials and constant physical movements are standard which require physical strength associated with hard labor. Job involves physical activity to include lifting, pushing, bending, reaching, grabbing and carrying is required on a regular basis.

3.Employee is exposed to chemical products and requires knowledge and use of safety.

4.Job demands include frequent change of tasks, irregular work scheduled, and working closely with others as part of a team.

5.Additonal job physical demands are available.

Additional Information

1.This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug testing.

2.Position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

3.This position requires working evening and/or weekend hours or during emergencies and natural disasters.
