Pay Ranges:
Environmental Technician I: $17.70/hr. - $21.68/hr.
Environmental Technician II: $19.51/hr. - $23.91/hr.
Environmental Technician III: $21.51/hr. - $26.35/hr.
Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (40 Hours/Week)

MAJOR FUNCTIONS
Technical field work within a comprehensive environmental control program.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Progressively responsible field work assisting in operating light and medium-sized vehicles and spray application equipment controlling larval and adult mosquitoes, found in mosquito habitats.
Physically operates larvicide and adult mosquito spray equipment in compliance with County policies and state and federal regulations. Responsible for ensuring proper mixture and application of insecticides. Observes operational conditions making any necessary adjustments and/or reports defects. Assists with identifying, evaluating and treating mosquito habitats and resting areas in specific regions of the County. Assists with mosquito habitat inspections.
Investigates service requests and operates special traps utilized for mosquito surveillance.
Keeps accurate records of work performed and chemicals used. Will be trained to identify mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes and document the results into appropriate database.
Responsible for performing simple field repairs of equipment. Provides general and preventive maintenance of spray equipment and assigned vehicles (i.e.: washes, cleans, polishes and makes minor repairs to equipment and spray equipment).
May be required to work irregular hours or shifts. Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Ability to learn to use taxonomic keys and identify mosquitoes to genus and species.
Ability to lift a minimum of forty-five (45) pounds, 40- 50 pounds regularly and 80-100 pounds occasionally.
Ability to use and provide preventive maintenance and emergency repairs of equipment.
Ability to think and react calmly and responsively to emergency situations.
Ability to work independently and on a team.
Ability to work with and around various chemicals.
Customer-service skills. Should be friendly and polite when interacting with internal/external customers and vendors.
Detail oriented. Because of the use and application of pesticides, need to be able to follow instructions carefully in order to prevent harm to citizens, the environment, and themselves. Must keep accurate records of chemicals used.
Physical stamina. May spend hours on their feet, often crouching, kneeling, and crawling. Able to withstand uncomfortable weather and environmental conditions (i.e. heat, rain).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Environmental Technician I:
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Must have a basic understanding and knowledge of biology or environmental systems. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.
A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must pass the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control License exams within 6 months of employment.
Environmental Technician II:
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of two (2) years' experience in mosquito control/related experience.
Must have a current Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control License or be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with identification of mosquitoes of Florida
Experience with domestic mosquito inspections
Environmental Technician III:
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of three (3) years' experience in mosquito control/related experience.
Must have a current Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Health Pest Control License, which includes CORE certification, or be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced Mosquito Control Certification
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must pass respirator physical.
Because environmental technicians can be exposed to hazards from equipment, chemicals, or toxic materials, they must follow proper safety procedures, such as wearing hazmat suits and sometimes respirators, and other personal protective equipment even in warm weather.
This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
