UW Facilities manages the University's buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. We have an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Parking Specialist.

Under the general direction of the Parking Operations Manager and Parking Operations Assistant Manager, Parking Specialists play a principal role in creating a remarkable first and last impression for anyone coming to the university campus. Parking Specialists, in an approachable and friendly manner, issue parking permits, collect parking fees, perform parking enforcement duties, provide consistent information about parking system processes and procedures and perform other parking-related field duties.

Parking Specialists deliver exceptional customer service in every way including engaging with customers, responding to questions completely and accurately, offering viable parking options and mapping convenient routes to campus destinations. Parking Specialists demonstrate commitment to the department mission and vision through making every customer feel welcome to campus, helping customers navigate to their destination and providing a customer experience designed to strengthen the reputation of the university.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Parking Specialists are expected to provide "Welcoming & Wayfinding" and heighten the customer experience by

  • Responding to all customers in a friendly and respectful manner

  • Providing directions, offering parking options

  • Using all service tools (handouts, maps…) available to assist the customer

  • Handing out supervisor contact cards and promptly forwarding customer follow up questions/concerns to the supervisor

  • Thoroughly understanding the uses of all products sold

  • Using parking system hardware and software applications

  • Issuing permits and citations accurately

  • Perform credit card transactions accurately

  • Working to educate the public about the campus parking system

Parking Specialists take responsibility for daily duties by

  • Arriving to work on time and ready to engage customers

  • Making sure the environment within and surrounding the kiosk is clean and tidy at all times

  • Checking supplies at the beginning of each shift to ensure that all is well stocked and maintained throughout the day

  • Reviewing the bulletin each day; maintaining awareness of the day's arrangements and events

  • Checking work email daily; maintaining awareness of pertinent information

  • Presenting a neat and tidy appearance

  • Maintaining cleanliness in university vehicles including removing unused items after each use

  • Seeking new assignments and responsibilities during slow times

Parking Specialists work together as a team by

  • Being friendly, courteous and respectful of team members

  • Understanding the importance of safety while performing all duties

  • Continuously contributing to the team by participating in all aspects of the job

  • Participating in daily huddles and problem resolution

  • Communicating pertinent information via radio and/or phone

  • Ensuring that all shared equipment (handhelds, flashlights) is properly secured at the end of each shift

  • Embracing the department mission and vision through making every customer feel welcome, helping customers navigate to their destination and providing a customer experience designed to strengthen the reputation of the university

  • Provide parking information and general campus direction to the campus community and visitors; apply established customer service standards; interact with every customer in an ambassadorial, service-oriented, highly-visible manner; offer guidance and assistance as needed

  • Sell parking permits and collect fees for daily parking, which includes operating a point-of-sale system.

  • Maintain an above-average working knowledge of campus parking regulations, parking lots, parking structures, building locations and affecting construction impacts

  • Interpret policies and procedures that govern citation issuance; issue neat, accurate and complete parking warnings and citations using a computerized hand-held ticket writer or manually in accordance with campus parking policies and procedures and the WAC and RCW

  • Patrol assigned campus areas and observe parking and traffic patterns; completely inspect daily assigned areas for full duration of the shift; inspect and report lot conditions; identify and report inadequate traffic and parking signage, identify, report and record lost, stolen and altered permits; conduct parking lot surveys for space inventory, occupancy and other information as needed; conduct towing/relocation/immobilization/impound protocol including completing all appropriate paperwork and documents

  • Direct traffic at assigned intersections, street crossings, campus avenues or at other locations, and as directed install, post or place any appropriate parking signage, barricades or other traffic control equipment

  • Report observed safety hazards, suspicious persons or activities and damages to University property

  • Complete special event assignments, year-round and on holidays as needed, in accordance with department policy and procedures, ensuring an accurate account of moneys collected, when applicable

  • Respond to campus emergencies such as earthquakes, fires, weather-related hazards, after normal hours, on weekends and holidays, as requested

  • Assist with the training of new employees and student staff, as assigned

  • Maintain work areas and assigned vehicle(s) to be neat, clean and orderly

  • Transport staff to various campus destinations as needed

  • As assigned by the Parking Operations Manager or Parking Operations Assistant Managers appear in court to give testimony related to subpoenas

  • As assigned by the Parking Operations Manager or Parking Operations Assistant Managers, assist in Transportation Services offices with administrative duties, such as distribution of materials, filing, answering telephones, running errands and change funds, and other related duties, as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements include:

  • One year public contact work in a customer service environment;

  • Possession of a valid Washington State motor vehicle driver's license; and

  • No previous felony convictions.

Additional Requirements include:

  • Demonstrated excellent customer service and communication skills, ability to effectively communicate detailed directions to campus visitors and respond to a variety of questions

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Computer experience utilizing Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Word software and e-mail programs or willingness to learn and use computers and related applications

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Experience processing credit card payments and ability to meet standards for handling and balancing of payments

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to bend, kneel, stoop, and carry/lift objects such as parking barricades weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Must be able to stand and/or walk up to seven hours per eight-hour shift, nine-hours per ten-hour shift; must be able to cover and average of eight to twelve linear miles daily over hilly terrain, around parked cars in both covered and uncovered parking facilities

  • Must be able to provide proof of satisfactory driving record

  • Must be able to work outside year-round, in all types of weather with or without shelter

  • Must be able to work in a kiosk with varying degrees of temperature with adequate heating and cooling during all seasons

  • May require additional hours based on operational necessity such as working special events, including mandatory overtime

  • Work in motor vehicle parking areas in presence of exhaust fumes

  • Must be able to work effectively with minimum supervision as well as work in a shared workspace with co-workers

  • Must be able to work under pressure and assist customers under varying traffic conditions

  • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment.

  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.

  • This position is not telework eligible.
