APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED FOR TEMPORARY HOURLY PARKING ATTENDANT POSITIONS FOR THE 2023-2024 ACADEMIC YEAR.

Immediate openings. These are temporary, part-time, hourly assignments. Hours are not guaranteed and assignments are based on the needs of the department.

The position is expected to start in mid-September and end on or before June 30, 2024, and is also contingent on the academic schedule. Some months will have no hours available for work. The schedule is not guaranteed and hours will vary depending on the needs of the college. Work is generally scheduled during the 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. shift, 0-4 days per week, however, hours could be available for evening event work. This position works primarily at the Bellingham Technical College main campus, but will occasionally work at the Perry Center, located about 2 miles from the main campus.

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Patrols campus parking areas;

  • Observes parking and traffic patterns; and issues citations for parking violations;may follow through on citations;

  • Reports traffic and parking conditions and incidents requiring security investigation;may assist in investigating vehicle accidents and car prowls; respond to campus call-backs within 15 minutes;

  • Visually checks arriving vehicles for valid parking permit;

  • Advises Facilities Coordinator on possible need for temporary or permanent permit needs where none have been issued;

  • Directs the flow of campus traffic to appropriate areas; directs traffic for campus events and emergency response;

  • Directs visitors to parking areas and office and provides general campus information upon request; follows written and/or verbal instructions;

  • Maintains communications with other staff through cell phones, radios, telephones, E-mail, etc.;

  • Complies with college safety policies and procedures; may assist with snow removal and stranded motorists;

  • May assist in repair and set-up of perimeter signage;

  • May assist in administering first aid when necessary;

  • May assist in set up and take down of equipment such as whiteboards and easel and furnishings, folding chairs and tables needed for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events; move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools;

  • Although the position is not responsible for general campus security, it is expected to serve a role in the safety and security of the campus as well as participate as part of the College emergency and management response efforts;

  • Take part in training or exercises as it relates to campus safety and security;

  • Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

High school diploma or GED certificate. Six months experience in a similar field, physical ability to do required work; and/or equivalent education/experience. (Equivalent experience should include knowledge or experience in traffic control, knowledge of parking regulations, ability to patrol and enforce parking regulations, ability to drive safely, training, and personal qualifications related to the ability to perform the duties of this job).

Preferred qualifications:

Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office;

  • Skill to enter information and complete detail work with a very high degree of accuracy using the College's integrated computerized systems/programs;

  • Skill to remain calm during possible confrontations with parking violators;

  • Demonstrate effective and positive interpersonal communication skills;

  • Ability and willingness to work in all types of Pacific Northwest weather conditions through all season;

  • Ability and willingness to effectively communicate with all levels of campus personnel, with students, and visitors as an individual or in a group with respect and professionalism.

  • Ability to relate to and work in a diverse workplace with people with different cultural and social backgrounds.

  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment and be committed to building an atmosphere of trust, competence, confidentiality, and positive service to the college and community.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions;

  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Physical Work Environment:

This position performs work in an environment that may require the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., shove, pull, push, and carry objects; work in inclement weather conditions and extreme ambient temperatures (heat or cold); stoop, bend, reach, run, jump; able to work standing, mainly on concrete surfaces, walking and remaining on feet for up to 8 hours per day; sitting in small vehicles or carts.

Supplemental Information

Compensation:

$19.48 per hour. Additional benefits include some paid sick leave in accordance with Washington State law and Initiative I-1433. Sick leave is accrued at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. Employee Assistance Program (EAP), a free counseling & referral program. Potential flexible schedule; No additional benefits.

Background Check: This position will be subject to a pre-employment background check and final offer of employment is contingent upon passing a criminal background check satisfactory to the college. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
