Description:

Incumbent serves as Park Technician for the St. Joseph County Parks & Recreation Department, responsible for performing general upkeep and maintenance of County parks, facilities and grounds.

Essential Functions:

Maintains Park buildings, grounds, trails, and playgrounds, including painting, mowing grass, trimming/cutting shrubs and trees, cutting/splitting firewood, landscaping, seeding/planting, spraying pesticides/herbicides, applying fertilizers, raking leaves, and removing trash and debris. Assists in maintaining safety in ice and snow, including snow removal and applying salt to sidewalks/roads in winter as needed.

Cleans and services rest rooms, including sweeping/mopping floors, cleaning toilets and urinals, removing trash and replacing trash bags, cleaning walls and ceilings, and restocking soap and paper products as needed.

Maintains shelters and rental buildings, including sweeping floors, removing trash and replacing trash bags, wiping off tables/seats, dusting, and cleaning windows.

Inspects and maintains park facilities and equipment, such as repairing/replacing picnic tables, fences and playground equipment, replacing light bulbs and filters, and performing minor plumbing, HVAC, electrical and carpentry repairs/renovations.

Assists in construction of facilities, shelters, buildings, trail bridges, signs and other construction projects as assigned.

Provides assistance for leisure and interpretive programs as requested.

Regularly operates various trucks/equipment/tools in the performance of duties, including back hoe, bull dozer, dump truck, snow plow, tractors, mowers, wood splitters, chipper, weed eaters, hedgers, trimmers, pruners, tiller, edger, leaf blower, chain saws, drills, paint sprayers, welding equipment, cutting torch, hammers, wrenches, screw drivers, files, gauges, air compressor, air nozzle, belt sander, grinder, shovels, rakes, brooms, mops and other equipment/tools as needed.

Maintains department trucks, tractors and equipment, including checking fluids and other preventive maintenance as needed.

Provides supervision for part-time and seasonal employees, including making work assignments and providing necessary training.

Occasionally operates snow guns during winter months.

Occasionally serves on 24-hour call during snow emergencies.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED.

Successful completion of building trades training program or equivalent experience in building trades, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department policies and procedures and applicable OHSA safety policies and procedures.

Working knowledge of methods, practices, and materials used in grounds and facility maintenance, with ability to maintain park grounds and complete repairs on park facilities and equipment as needed.

Knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with a variety of pesticides, herbicides, and cleaning chemicals and ability to read and understand label directions for correct mixing and use of chemicals/supplies.

Ability to meet all hiring requirements including a pre-employment drug screen.

Ability to safely operate a variety of trucks/equipment/tools in the performance of duties, such as back hoe, bull dozer, dump truck, snow plow, tractors, mowers, wood splitters, chipper, weed eaters, hedgers, trimmers, pruners, tiller, edger, leaf blower, chain saws, drills, paint sprayers, welding equipment, cutting torch, hammers,

wrenches, screw drivers, files, gauges, air compressor, air nozzle, belt sander, grinder, shovels, rakes, brooms, mops and other equipment/tools as needed.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to provide access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to supervise assigned work crews, including making work assignments and providing training/instruction as necessary.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out verbal or written instructions.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, and often on several tasks at the same time.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations, plan/layout assigned work projects, and compute/perform arithmetic operations.

Ability to read/interpret detailed blueprints, specifications, equipment manuals, instruments, gauges and dials.

Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including driving, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling objects, carrying/lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds, working in awkward or cramped positions, close/far vision, color/depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.

Ability to occasionally work extended hours, evenings and weekends and occasionally travel out of town for training, sometimes overnight.

Ability to occasionally serve on 24-hour call for snow removal during winter months.

Possession of a valid driver's license and a demonstrated safe driving record.

Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
