WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
A successful park ranger is curious, observant, physically active and interacts in a professional, calm and patient manner with a variety of park users. Interest in the natural and cultural history of Southeast Alaska and caring about the stewardship of public land is also desirable. The ability to work both independently and with a variety of coworkers is required.
The ranger prepares clear, accurate and concise written reports as required. The ranger observes, reports and mitigates hazards in parking facilities and park areas. The ranger participates in training, safety and informational meetings, communicates with the public in a courteous and helpful manner, provides information to the public about rules, regulations, route finding and interpretation on the cultural and natural history of park areas and performs most assigned duties outdoors regardless of weather.

The summer season is busy with high demand from residents, seasonal workers, tourists and commercial operators for the use of parking, recreation areas and trails. The rangers work cooperatively with Parks and Landscape Maintenance, Juneau Police Department, Juneau Community Service Officers, Docks and Harbors and other CBJ staff on different projects. We also work with Trail Mix crews, Youth Employment in Parks (YEP) crews and volunteers on trail and park projects.
In winter, this position may also help with plowing, snow removal, chain sawing windfall and other routine maintenance projects.
WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position generally works Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM-3:30 PM, including holidays. The Parks Maintenance facility is located at 802 Front Street in downtown Douglas
DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Under the general direction of the Lead Park Ranger, the Park Ranger (parking enforcement) position will patrol municipally managed parking facilities, including parking garages, recreation areas, and trailhead parking lots by foot, mountain bike and light truck to enforce parking ordinances by issuing verbal or written warnings and assisting the public in the use of the new parking lot payment system. This position will issue citations as appropriate and impound junk or abandoned vehicles as authorized using mobile devices and state-of-the-art technology.
In addition to supporting the Downtown Parking Management program, this position will monitor and enforce commercial use regulations, including compliance with commercial use permits. The Park Ranger, with the assistance of Juneau Police Officers, may issue trespass notices to individuals engaging in illegal activities at Parks and Recreation facilities and parks.
This position may request assistance from law enforcement of other emergency service agencies when necessary. Conducts investigations of illegal activities, collects evidence and documents findings.
May patrol city parkland to ensure campers are complying with applicable rules and regulations. May trespass unruly campers and remove abandoned property as authorized by law. Cooperates with various CBJ and non-profit social services to assist campers in need.
This position will also perform general maintenance in public parks and facilities. The ranger may operate a variety of power machinery and tools including brushers and chainsaws.
Performs minor field repairs to power tools and equipment as required. Picks up trash, paints, cleans facilities, and performs minor repairs of park fixtures and equipment. Installs traffic signs, directional and interpretive signs and other bulletins and notices as needed.
Other: Not less than 18 years of age at time of appointment; AND
A valid driver's license at time of appointment.
Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
Note: This position receives designated citation authority as a municipal enforcement agent from the City Manager.
Desired Qualifications
Other: Prior experience in law enforcement, natural resources management, or related fields.
