The PRCR Department plays a leading role in the quality of life and character of the Capital City. With nearly 10,000 acres of land, 220 parks, and 120 miles of greenway trails, the Department provides a wide range of facilities, amenities, and programs that support the social, cultural, mental and physical well-being of citizens. The Department is guided by a comprehensive 20- year System Plan that identifies the overall vision of Bringing People to Parks and Parks to People.
The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking candidates that align with the City's values, is team-oriented and a leader with passion and vision for parks and serving the community.
The Park Operations Specialist performs a variety of tasks including park operations, natural resource management, and nature education at two nature preserves. This position is a key member of our staff and contributes to our team effort to serve the public by providing courteous customer service and protecting our natural areas.
Primary Job Duties:
Assess and address safety concerns and serve as part of parks' emergency response team
Respond to patrons' questions and rental inquiries
Reinforce park policies through education
Open and/or close preserves
Assist with creation of interpretive materials including signs, posters, and kiosk displays
Lead and/or assist in instruction of a variety of nature programs
Contribute to the planning, development and implementation of special events and programming
Maintain trails, gardens, bird feeders, and nest boxes
Perform animal care duties
Participate in wildlife monitoring and natural resource inventory initiatives
Lead and work alongside volunteer groups
Perform light maintenance, field work, and custodial duties
Provide facility tours to prospective renters
Minimum Requirements:
At least 18 years of age with a strong interest in nature and the outdoors
High school degree
Possess a valid driver's license
Ability to communicate clearly
Practice courteous customer service
Responsible, organized, and able to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
Preferred Skills:
College degree, coursework, or experience in environmental education, environmental science, or related area.
Willingness to lead nature programs for all ages.
Working knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
Comfortable being around a variety of native wildlife and educational ambassador reptiles.
Familiarity with a variety of hand tools and power equipment (shovel, rake, leaf blower, line trimmer, etc.)
Occasionally manage items that weigh up to 50lbs and travel over rough terrain regularly
Position Hours:
This is a 15-20 hour per week position with weekend, holiday, and evening hours required. Schedule will vary due to park programs and needs.
