This is a professional and supervisory work performing a variety of recreation program implementation activities and park maintenance at assigned locations. Responsible for supervising the operation of assigned parks or facilities.

Duties will include program planning and implementation, activity scheduling, revenue producing activities and coordination of special events. Complete accurate and detailed administrative work including but not limited to: attendance forms, reports, and payment receipts. Follows all City and Department policies and procedures. Supervise Recreation Supervisors, Recreation Aides, volunteers and contractors.

Plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate recreation and maintenance personnel engaged in recreation programs, organized athletic events, games, ballfield maintenance, litter removal and special or generalized classes of instruction for all age groups in a variety of recreational activities.

Instructs patrons in a variety of recreation activities and equipment use in order to facilitate patron participation, develop/improve skills, ensure safety, and maximize patron enjoyment of the activities/events/programs.

Performs custodial work as needed.  Ensures that the park grounds, playgrounds, sports fields/courts, restrooms, concession areas, offices, parking lots, trash receptacles, recreation centers, pavilions, and tables/chairs are properly operated and maintained in order to provide a clean and safe environment.

Resolves a variety of day-to-day problems/issues in order to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of park operation and services provided.

Interacts with the public and City employees in order to give directions/information, explain activities and procedures, identify their needs, and resolve day-to-day operational issues.

Sets up/takes down temporary facilities for meetings, events, and special activities.

Supervises Recreation Supervisor, Recreation Aides, volunteers and contractors.

Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates, authorizes leave and overtime; evaluates and rates employee performance.

Prepares and maintains budgets for assigned program areas that are cost effective and meet the monetary goals for the department and City.

Properly orientate new employees; provide thorough job instructions, training and in-service training to current employees.

Identifies nationwide and local trends in the areas of early childhood, youth, teens, and before/after care. Develops and implements similar programs and opportunities to residents and participants.

Performs a variety of administrative tasks in an accurate and timely manner and helps with the implementation of rules and regulations.  For example, schedule and maintain staff time sheets, properly document accidents/incidents, CDS forms, collection of fees, prepare/submit accurate reports in a timely manner, and maintain records for registered participants.

Requisitions equipment, materials and supplies. Maintains inventory.

Meets the general public and follows prescribed departmental rules in providing for their needs.

Assists with City-sponsored special events.

Assists in other programming areas that are directly or indirectly related to the Recreation Supervisor's assigned responsibilities.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of supervisory and budgeting principles and practices, with the ability to comprehend and determine budgets for assigned program areas.

Knowledge of general sports/recreation program/activities procedures and rules.

Knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.

Knowledge of established customer service policies and procedures.

Knowledge of procedures for operating various office equipment, including personal computers.

Ability to explain rules, policies and procedures to patrons.

Ability to read, understand, and follow instructions/guidelines.

Ability to organize and coordinate a variety of recreation activities.

Ability to work with limited supervision.

Ability to work effectively in high stress situations and multi-task.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to accurately complete assignments in a timely fashion.

Ability to explain City and Department rules, policies, and procedures.

Ability to interact with co-workers, City officials, and the general public, including members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, or sexual orientation to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and/or climb to complete assigned work activities.

Ability to work outdoors in a variety of temperature/weather conditions.

Basic knowledge of turf management, irrigation and preventative maintenance.

Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Leisure Services or related field; five (5) years of recreation program implementation or closely related work; and two (2) years of supervisory experience required.

  Equivalent combination of relevant training and experience may be considered. Basic First Aid/CPR certified; applicants not certified must obtain certification within six (6) months of employment.

Must obtain a DCF child certificate within one (1) year of employment.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and satisfactory driving history throughout employment.  Applicants must be able to work varying shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends.  Copies of certifications must be provided at time of application.

  The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office and moderately loud in other areas of the parks.  The employee is expected to use standard office equipment and common recreation equipment.
