THE POSITION

To perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled horticulture tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of parks, pools, recreation, and cemetery facilities and buildings. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy in the Community Services Department, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The City of Woodland is looking to fill a Park Maintenance Worker I/II position in the

Community Services Department. The Ideal Candidate for the current vacancy is someone

who has a good understanding of many aspects of the maintenance of facilities, parks, janitorial, and horticulture. This position requires a "team player" with good interpersonal, time

management, and communication skills. The Ideal Candidate must be highly self-motivated,

able to work independently with minimal oversite, demonstrate good judgement, as well as be

organized, flexible, approachable, resourceful, and a positive team contributor on a

consistent basis. This position will also require the selected candidate work weekends,

standby and overtime as necessary.

Park Maintenance Worker I:

This is an entry-level classification in the park maintenance worker series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties.

May be required to work any shift, including a regular work-shift that includes weekends and holidays, and routinely participate in a weeklong stand-by shift. Park Maintenance Worker I will usually exercise less independence, discretion and judgment on matters related to work procedures and methods.

Park Maintenance Worker II:

This is the journey level in the park maintenance worker series. This class differs from Parks Maintenance Worker I in that incumbent performs more complex parks maintenance duties, including the requirement to work any shift, weekends, and holidays, to work independently, exercise judgment, and operate the full range of tools and mechanical equipment related to a specific assignment.

The incumbent Park Maintenance Worker II may also be expected to assist in the oversight and training of less experienced personnel. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Park Maintenance I level, or when filled from the outside requires prior work experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performing general grounds cleaning, including emptying trash receptacles, mopping, sweeping, and raking City parks, ball field maintenance/set up, and Cemetery as needed. Maintain irrigation, maintain synthetic turf, mow, cultivate, prune, weed, renovate, and fertilize grass, plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs.

Operate power mowers, turf groomers, chain saws, rototillers, aerators, hedgers, spreaders, front-end loader, edgers, air compressors, and other equipment. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all performed work, while all safe work procedures i.e., necessary PPE. Drive vehicles and equipment as required.

Prepare and maintain athletic fields and related facilities, swimming pools, and cemetery/interment operations. Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that the failure of such attendance undermines the City's ability to provide critical services to the employees, department and the public.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Install, maintain and replace playground equipment and fences; assemble tables, benches and bleachers. Applying fertilizers and spraying various herbicides and pesticides in City park and recreation areas.

Respond to inquiries from the general public. Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems. Assist in setting up community services and special events.

Maintain, repair and replace plumbing systems and fixtures such as light switches, motors, wall receptacles, faucets, drinking fountains, water heaters, water closet, urinals, water regulators and pressure valves, and building maintenance as required. Work cooperatively with others. Meet all Standby Program requirements; work any shift including weekends and holidays. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Park Maintenance Worker I:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Six (6) months of experience in the care and maintenance of landscapes or facilities.

License and Certificate: Required upon hire, possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Park Maintenance Worker II:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience: One (1) year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Park Maintenance Worker I in the City of Woodland.

License and Certificate: Required upon hire, possession of a California Driver's License. It is highly desirable to possess a State of California Qualified Applicator Certificate, Category B.

BENEFITS

Future Salary COLAs:

4% increase (eff July 2024), 1% increase (eff January 2025), 4% increase (eff July 2025) and 1% increase (eff January 2026)

Retirement:

CalPERS Retirement System (2 % @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members). The City does not participate in social security

Deferred Compensation:

Choice of deferred compensation plans (Traditional and Roth) with 1% City-match effective July 2024. After successful completion of probation, new hires are also eligible for a 2% City contribution.

Medical:

CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs. City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance. Maximum Family Medical Allowance (2024): $2,463.99 per month

Dental/Vision:

City paid Delta Dental and VSP Vision Benefits

LTD/STD:

City paid wage protection for long/short term disabilities

Life Insurance:

City provides $50,000 life insurance policy

Supplemental Benefits:

Voluntary Supplemental Life, Cancer, Accident Only, STD/LTD and Critical Illness insurance, and Flexible Spending Accounts available

Vacation:

6.7 hours per month during first three years of service

Holidays:

12.5 paid holidays (including two floating holidays)

$200 per month upon certification

Certification Pay:

Additional pay for eligible certifications (up to a total of 4%)
