This posting will be used to fill a full-time permanent Park Maintenance Supervisor position within the Department Recreation and Parks.

Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks is primarily responsible for the provision of a comprehensive system of recreational programs for county residents and the preservation of valuable land in the form of more than 140 parks and sanctuaries.

The Park Maintenance Supervisor also coordinates the maintenance of various regional athletic fields and facilities.

It is responsible supervisory and participatory skilled lead work in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of County parks and related facilities.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for assisting in planning the maintenance, repair, and construction of park facilities and in overseeing and participating in the work of a small crew of park maintenance personnel. Work is performed under the guidance of general supervision with latitude for independent decision making in field operations. Work is evaluated through adherence to schedules and standards, observation, inspections, and review of work and material reports.

Schedules work assignments in keeping with established standards and requirements; sets work priorities; assign work and personally oversees performance; inspects parks and facilities to determine work, labor, and materials needed; responds to requests for special maintenance or improvements as in the case of golf course or playing field facilities.

Trains employees in operations and safety standards and practices; resolves personnel problems and interprets and applies controlling personnel policies.

Serves as lead worker of crews on a variety of assignments, and may supervise lower level maintenance personnel, particularly those involving such activities as the layout and preparation of athletic fields or others demanding considerable experience.

Responds to emergencies involving safety of persons or property.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of department rules, regulations and operating procedures.

Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment employed in repairing and maintaining parks and park and recreation facilities.

Knowledge of basic techniques of training and supervision.

Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions appropriate in the construction, maintenance, and use of park facilities.

Knowledge of trees, shrubs, grasses, and their planting and cultivation.

Skill in the operation of park maintenance and construction tools and equipment.

Ability to recognize safety hazards and take precautionary measures to protect self and others.

Ability to plan, assign, and act as lead worker of a small group of skilled and unskilled employees and to train them in proper work procedures.

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports of time, materials, and work accomplished.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or vocational school; two (2) or more years of experience in the repair and maintenance of park facilities and equipment, including six (6) months or more of lead worker experience; and a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE: Candidates that do not possess a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license will be required to obtain this license within six (6) months of employment.

Candidates must possess at minimum a valid Non-Provisional Class C motor vehicle operator's license. In addition, candidates must obtain a CDL Learner's Permit within 45 days of hire to allow for adequate CDL training.

Supplemental Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those applicants with:
1.) Four (4) or more years of experience in park maintenance supervision.
2.) Proficiency in Microsoft Word.
3.) Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Note: This is a Safety Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.

Work includes public relations and enforcement of laws and regulations. Patrols park on foot and in vehicle; enforces park rules and regulations; performs first aid as necessary; opens buildings. Checks gate attendants and money pick-ups; supervises part-time employees and volunteers; checks in groups for pavilions and camps. Secures park for night; counts daily receipts; empties vending machines; secures cash. Plans and prepares, and presents interpretive, recreational, and informational programs; maintains live animal displays; operates and maintains audio-visual equipment. Maintains park; mows grass, picks up litter, repairs signs, and trims trees; maintains equipment. Assists with preparation of forms and brochures; acts for superior.
