The Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services Department is recruiting for a Park Maintenance Repair Worker position. The Park Maintenance Repair Worker reports directly to the Senior Maintenance Worker or Parks Facility Supervisor, and is responsible for maintaining, repairing, installing and renovating irrigation systems, playgrounds, Koi fish pond, waterfalls and pumps, tables, benches and barbeque units, and performing other maintenance duties as assigned.

Incumbents perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled park maintenance repair work of routine difficulty. Some of the typical duties include, but are not limited to: park maintenance, preventative maintenance, repair,installation, and renovation of irrigation systems(potable & recycled), controllers, main line valves, zone valves, backflow prevention device and isolation valves, drinking fountains, irrigation sprinklers, pipes, fittings and flanges, playgrounds, park furniture and hardware, and decorative fountains and swimming pools including associated pumps, metering devices, and chemical control units. Incumbents also read blueprints and schematics to identify and solve irrigation issues; draw sketches and plans for assigned projects; estimate materials required; perform repair and overhaul of park maintenance machinery and equipment such as chain saws and mowers and may operate arc welding/oxyacetylene equipment; record time and materials used into the Parks Division's Business Intelligence computer system (InForEAM); train assigned personnel in performing tasks associated with assignments; assume responsibility for work area, crew, and public safety on assigned maintenance and repair projects;and, on standby, respond to emergency park issues on a rotational basis.

Depending on their qualifications, successful candidate(s) may be hired as a Park Maintenance Repair Worker I or Park Maintenance Repair Worker II.

The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

  • Desirable certifications: (a minimum of one of the following certifications to be successfully obtained within 1 year of appointment): Certified Backflow Prevention Tester, Certified Playground Safety Inspector, or Certified Pool Operator.

Education: Completion of High School, General Educational Development(GED) or a California Proficiency Certificate.

Experience:

  • Park Maintenance Repair Worker I Three (3) years of experience(2080 hours= 1 year) in parks, grounds and park maintenance repair or related repair work.

  • Park Maintenance Repair Worker II - Four (4) years of experience (2080 hours= 1 year) in parks, grounds and park maintenance repair or related repair work.

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.

  • As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to the Job Specific Questions. Only the candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews, one of which may include a practical/writing exercise.

Identify the steps to troubleshoot an irrigation system failure in a logical and sequential manner using an example of an irrigation system in an entire park site is "off."

  • Describe your experience reading blue prints, construction documents, or plans. Please describe how you have used these documents in your work experience.

  • Describe your experience maintaining and repairing playground equipment. Describe the types of structures and repairs you worked on and provide examples of safety regulations of which you have knowledge.

  • Describe any experience you may have in a lead capacity in general or on a specific project, including the number of staff you led, project description and results.
