Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will be placed in a pay status and can expect to work a maximum of 25 out of 26 pay periods per year. This can be variable due to project requirements or weather conditions.Montezuma Castle National Monument Major Duties:

  • Provide pre-established talks normally following a prescribed outline and requiring application of broad subject-matter knowledge of the features of interest peculiar to the site.

  • Answer a wide variety of visitor questions that arise from observation of the features themselves; from the demonstrated major interests of visitors, or the nature of the talks.

  • Guide very large groups (of up to 50 people) in situations where: the physical limitations of the area or facility being explained make it difficult to accommodate the party on trips of two or more hours duration; the work situation is such that there is potential danger of serious accidents or injury or other emergency situations; or the trips are of several hours duration, and teams of guides are utilized. Perform minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger.

  • Provide a wide range of services to visitors, including assistance with lost articles, car trouble, and first aid; and provides information about weather conditions, highway routes, park and concessioner facilities, and prices. Report discrepancies and damage to others that are responsible for such items.

  • Collecting appropriate fees at a visitor center following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, computer, or Point of Sale system.

Tonto National Monument Major Duties:

  • Providing formal and informal interpretive talks and walks (up to three miles in length). The interpretive service is of a repetitive nature.

  • Collecting appropriate fees at a visitor center following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, computer, or Point of Sale system.

  • Assisting with the presentation of educational field trips for students of all ages. In addition, this park guide may represent the monument at local community events, festivals, and celebrations.

  • Under the direction of a higher graded Interpretive staff member, the park guide may assist with developing digital media and event flyers that explain the area's recreational opportunities, interpretive services, natural and cultural resources, park events, and potential safety hazards.

  • Maintain parks publications, bulletin boards, and various interpretive exhibits.

  • The incumbent is responsible for working closely with interpretive colleagues, other divisions, partner groups, and ensuring the safety of visitors, employees, and the public.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at lease one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked.

  • OR-

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, such as American history, science, public speaking, parks and recreation, education, or communications. You must include transcripts.

  • OR-

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above (50% of the related coursework required). You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
