JOB INFORMATION

Park Designer positions manage park planning and development projects from design planning and through construction phases; provide functional supervision over contract design consultants; prepare and/or oversee preparation of master plans, site studies and reports, cost estimates, project budgets, landscape designs, construction drawings, and contract documents for parks, playgrounds, and other public facilities; review landscape, irrigation, engineering, architectural, electrical plans, and others prepared by private consultants for City park development projects and other City public facilities; act as liaison and consultant to other Parks and Recreation Department divisions, various groups, agencies, and other City departments to consult, advise, and provide technical assistance on plant materials, irrigation systems, water conservation, and other City standards relative to park facilities; negotiate agreements with developers, consultants, and other entities on park and recreation issues; make presentations to community groups, advisory committees, and the Parks and Recreation Board and City Council; and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Park Designer employees with a valid State of California registration as a Landscape Architect are eligible for 15% additional pay.

VIEW JOBS 4/21/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-07-20T00:00 JOB INFORMATION Park Ranger positions assist in the management or operation of a resource-based, open-space, or regional park; drive pick-up trucks, four-wheel drive, and other park utility vehicles in patrols of assigned park areas; design and conduct interpretive programs on the cultural, natural, and historical features of various City parks; design and prepare exhibits and publications; perform general park maintenance, trail maintenance, and habitat restoration projects; monitor park usage; enforce park policies and regulations; issue citations; assist in planning, monitoring, and implementing special events; train, direct, and evaluate the work of contracted labor crews and volunteers; serve as a liaison and conduct presentations to community groups, other City departments, other agencies, and the public regarding park facilities, services, and improvements; prepare reports; and perform other duties as assigned. NOTES: * The list established for these positions may be used to fill full-time, half-time, and/or limited, hourly vacancies. * The list established for these positions may be used to fill vacancies for open-space, shoreline, and other areas as necessary. * Park Ranger employees may work unusual shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. * Park Ranger positions may include duties that involve hiking long distances and lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds. * Park Ranger employees must wear standard apparel as prescribed.Costs for the initial uniform will be reimbursed to the employee after completion of the probationary period and attainment of permanent status as a Park Ranger. * Park Ranger employees MUST possess the following within six months from the date of hire: Completion of a valid California Penal Code 832 Powers of Arrest course (or equivalent, if out-of-state); and a valid CPR/First Aid Certificate. * In accordance with California Public Resources Code section 5163, all persons holding Park Ranger positions must get tested for tuberculosis (TB) when hired and every four years thereafter as a condition of continued employment. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated. EDUCATION: Associate's Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 60 semester/90 quarter). NOTE: * Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis.One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units. EXPERIENCE: Two years of full-time experience assisting in the management or operation of a resource-based, open-space, or regional park. Qualifying experience MUST include: Enforcing park regulations and/or having the authority to do so; and writing/presenting historical and natural science interpretive programs. NOTES: * An Associate's Degree or higher in Resource Management, Public Resource Protection, Park Management, Outdoor Recreation, Geography, Biology, Environmental Studies, or a closely related field may be substituted for lack of experience in writing/presenting historical and natural science interpretive programs. * City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered. * Experience maintaining park grounds is NOT qualifying. LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire. HIGHLY DESIRABLE: * Resource management experience in trail maintenance and/or habitat restoration. * Knowledge of regional and cultural history. * Experience enforcing regulations and issuing citations. * Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
