SUMMARY

The Paraprofessional is a hands-on position responsible for assisting the Teacher in the implementation of instruction for the youth enrolled in the Caminos education program. The position is highly collaborative and requires excellent documentation and organizational skills, as well as, fluent knowledge of the Spanish language.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma required; Associate of Arts degree preferred

  • Fluent in English and Spanish in both written and oral forms required

  • At least one year of prior experience working with children required

  • Prior experience working in an educational setting preferred

  • Prior experience working with students enrolled in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program preferred

  • Prior experience working with at risk youth preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluently communicate written and orally in English and Spanish required

  • Must have good organizational skills

  • Ability to provide effective support in the implementation of curriculum and activities designated by the Teacher

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Strong analytical and creative thinking skills

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information

  • Must be able to work within the philosophy of services to children and families consistent with the ministry and goals of the Florida United Methodist Children's Home

  • Must have sensitivity to the service populations cultural and socioeconomic characteristics

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide supplemental support to the Teacher of daily instruction to meet the education needs of the students.

  • Support the Teacher and students by following designated classroom management techniques.

  • Provide line of sight and sound supervision for students in the classroom and during designated activities that may occur outside of the classroom including: lunch time, physical education/outside activities, on-campus activities and field trips ensuring that mandated staff to youth ratios are maintained at all times.

  • Keep records and prepare reports as requested.

  • Conduct pre- and post- educational assessments.

  • Participate in Interdisciplinary Meetings, staff/teacher meetings, Planning Conferences, in-service training programs, Staff Meetings as requested.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and familiarity with both FUMCH and Office of Refugee Resettlement Policy and Procedures relating to the care and supervision of Unaccompanied Children. This includes knowledge of legal background and authority governing the practice as related to working with Unaccompanied Children.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

This position requires excellent planning to meet the necessary Career and College Readiness Standards along with the academic and behavioral needs outlined in each students Personalized Education Plan. The position is highly collaborative and requires excellent documentation and organizational skills, as well as, a fluent knowledge of the Spanish language. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE * Bachelors degree in Education or related field preferred OR a minimum of an Associate of Arts degree with experience in related field * Prefer valid Florida Educator Certification * Prefer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Certification * Proficient in English and Spanish in both written and oral forms * Prior experience working with at-risk youth QUALIFICATIONS * Communicate written and orally in English and Spanish required * Must have strong organizational skills * Able to work cooperatively with others. * Excellent problem solving skills * Strong analytical and creative thinking skills * Proficient in Microsoft Office * Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information * Must be able to work within the philosophy of services to children and families consistent with the ministry and goals of the Florida United Methodist Children's Home * Must have sensitivity to the service populations cultural and socioeconomic characteristics ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Demonstrate applied knowledge of curriculum and the fundamental principles of psychology and human development. * Demonstrate familiarity with cultural patterns existing within a community which may affect the behavior of students. * Develop classroom curriculum that demonstrates compliance with the standards delineated by the Flores Settlement Agreement and applicable State requirements. * Expand on and adapt classroom curriculum programs and activities to meet individual need of the students * Establish relationships with students on a group and individual basis, gaining their confidence and trust and imparting a sense of security. * Instruct individuals and groups at appropriate developmental levels and maintain a lesson plan book clearly defining efforts to provide for individual differences. * Able to effectively implement educational services and curriculum standards for a non English speaking student population. * Write required reports/keep accurate and orderly records. * Work effectively with other staff members in the interdisciplinary setting to address students needs. * Participate effectively in Interdisciplinary Meetings, staff/teacher meetings, Planning Conferences, in-service training programs, Staff Meetings. * Provide guidance and direction to assigned Paraprofessional, ensuring that the Paraprofessional demonstrates a participating role within the classroom. * Able to organize and plan the activities of Paraprofessional. * Develop education plans for all assigned students. * Follow regulations and protocols outlined by the Office of Refugee and Resettlement (ORR). This includes knowledge of legal background and authority governing the practice as related to working with Unaccompanied Children. * Implement effective educational activities that satisfy the requirements of the students Personalized Education Plan * Establish and maintain a safe physical environment conducive to learning. * Implement school-wide behavior management system. * Perform other professional duties, as requested.
