5 days per week/8 hour shifts either 3P-11P or 11P-7A
The in-hospital paramedic will work assigned shifts in on the unit. During this time the paramedic will be able to function up to their level of certification in the State of Iowa under the direction of Physicians and Registered Nurses, following existing policies and procedures of Medical/Telemetry Department.
Supports evidence-based clinical practice and questions the rationale and scientific basis for clinical practice and/or changes in practice.
Complies with changes in clinical practice and standards.
Participates in data collection when the opportunity is presented.
Supports/participates in interpretation of clinical literature and uses to validate and/or change clinical practice.
Communication and Handoffs
Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, healthcare team members and other customers. Verbal communication is clear and precise. Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner using approved abbreviations.
Computer documentation is done in accordance with hospital and unit policies.
Real-time documentation is utilized.
Tools such as SBAR are consistently utilized to assure that critical information is clearly communicated, shared and updated with each handoff. SBAR handoffs are utilized to communicate patient treatment and assessment information, patient education needs, goals of care and other quality care measures.
Assists in creating a positive work environment by mentoring of staff/students, and working with team members to develop and facilitate initiatives to strive for positive outcomes in quality and care of patients.
Complies with all policies and procedures, and guides team members with compliance.
Reliable attendance is an expectation of the team member role.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria

Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.

Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.
Current Paramedic Licensure in the State of Iowa
Critical Care Paramedic Preferred
Minimum of three years' experience on a paramedic ground service or related experience.
Recent Critical Care Paramedic experience with air or ground EMS service preferred.
Current Paramedic license in the state of Iowa.
Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and PALS according to standards of the American Heart Association.
Must obtain NIHSS within 90 days of hire and maintain every two years thereafter.
Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually.
Critical Care Paramedic preferred.
The paramedic must be able to function in collaboration with the Medical/Telemetry nurse to provide the best medical attention to the patient.
Skilled in Arrhythmia interpretation.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to develop/maintain relationships with patients, coworkers and physicians.
