The Emergency Department Paramedic, provides direct and indirect patient care in an organized manner that reflects initiative, flexibility, clinical competence and responsibility under the direct/clinical supervision of a Physician, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, or Registered Nurse. Work cohesively with all team members to assure service recovery and conflict management. The Emergency Department Paramedic will provide care within the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center Paramedic scope of practice, in addition to the essential duties listed below.

Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collects and conveys information to RN and physician regarding the health status of patients throughout the visit. Will keep patients informed of their treatment plan, and will assist the RN in delivering and documenting care provided to the patient.

  • Performs specialized work initiating emergent or appropriate care under the supervision of the Emergency Department RN.

  • Assist patient into gown as appropriate. Takes Vital signs and records. Measures and records patients input and output. Attaches oxygen, oxygen saturation and cardiac monitor as requested/needed.

  • Clean and dress wounds. Set up and assist with procedures as directed.

  • Phlebotomy skills, performing basic laboratory procedures, wound cultures, Point of Care testing, EKG skills and application of splints.

  • Insert and discontinue IV catheters in adults & pediatric population and document as required.

  • Attends meetings and in-service as required by department policy and participates in continuous Quality Improvement projects

  • Utilizes knowledge of patient's age and cultural diversity into the provision of care.

  • Reports defective/broken equipment to appropriate department for repair according to protocol.

  • Clean & stock rooms.

  • Abides by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).

  • Serves a population newborn through geriatric.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Ability to apply the principles of patient care.

  • Basic keyboarding and computer skills.

  • Ability to calculate percentages, proportions and volume.

  • Ability to read, interpret and complete reports and documentation.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or GED.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience in a hospital preferred.

LICENSURE OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED

  • Current Kansas MICT-Paramedic certification

  • Healthcare Provider BLS (or able to attain within 30 days of hire/end of orientation)
