Summary

The Paramedic 2 functions as a member of the clinical team and provides direct and indirect professional care duties in the hospital setting in the Emergency Department/Urgent Care as defined by the organization. The Paramedic examines, plans, organizes, provides, and evaluates care utilizing provider orders and protocols for patients needing basic medical to critical care. Responsible for care and documentation of care and interventions provided. Works collaboratively with other care team members, and adheres to organizational standards, policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols. Reports to the Emergency Department/Urgent Care Nurse Manager and takes direction from the Emergency Department Charge Nurse and Medical Provider. The Paramedic 2 is additionally involved in professional advancement activities which may include serving as a preceptor for other paramedics or emergency medical providers (ED Tech), assist with education and skills training or serve as a an active member of department or organizational committee.

Education

Graduated from an accredited Paramedic Program.

Certification, Registration & Licensure

Licensure required: Current New Hampshire Paramedic license.

Registrations required: Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician's Paramedic (EMT-P).

Certification required: Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS

Refer to "Management of Mandatory Required Certifications, Competencies, Education/Training-Nursing" policy for department specific certifications.

Experience

Minimum of 2 years field experience and/or in the ED/UC hospital setting as a paramedic. Hospital setting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities of the ED Paramedic include but are not limited to patient triage, direct care of patient assignment including interventions, evaluation of patient condition and response to treatment, documentation of care, and administers medication per hospital policy. Functions as a member of the clinical team in the ED/UC settings.

  • Adheres to the System scope of practice defined for Paramedics in the ED/UC setting.

  • Manages patients with individualized care by evaluating effectiveness/outcome of care, recognizing changes in patient condition, and takes action for care based on clinical presentation, protocols and provider orders.

  • Collaborates effectively with patient, patient's family, and members of the health care team to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

  • Recognizes care needs. Implements care/interventions directly when needed or indirectly by collaboration with nursing team members, physicians or members of other health care disciplines.

  • Collaborates with colleagues to ensure patient and family involvement with discharge planning and the achievement of identified needs through teaching or referrals. Assumes responsibility for ensuring an integrated discharge planning process.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively as member of multi-disciplinary team.

  • Performs role of preceptor for paramedics and other emergency medical professionals.

  • Participates in education and training sessions for ED department for skills within scope of practice.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
