Reports to the Director, Patient Care Services. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs paramedic procedures and within the scope of practice as defined by the National EMS Education standard. Provides a safe and clean environment for patient care. Assists with both internal and external patient transport.

Performs paramedic procedures by:
Administering oxygen using various types of equipment.
Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Functioning as a part of the medical team, assisting nurses and physicians with patients who have the following problems including, but not limited to: obstructive airway, asthma, pulmonary disease, major trauma, diabetic emergencies, coma, infectious diseases, dehydration, respiratory distress and RSV/pneumonia.
Performing endotracheal and oropharyngeal suctioning under the supervision of the nurse/physician.
Performing designated paramedic procedures such as monitoring vital signs and patient status and relaying patient information to the nurse/physician.
Working closely with all members of the healthcare team including physicians, pastoral & social services staff, ancillary departments, support services staff, family members and personnel from other hospitals or agencies.
Initiating peripheral IV's & intraosseous infusion needles under the supervision of the nurse/physician; monitoring infusing IV's.
Performing defibrillation, cardioversion, intubation, intraosseus line placement, as ordered by physician.
Measuring and recording I & O and documenting in the patient's medical record.
Assisting with and/or providing total patient care including feeding, bathing and assisting with ambulation.
Administering medications according to the National EMS Education Standards and following departmental procedures for administering medications requiring co-sign by an RN (after an approved validation process).
Relieving tension pneumothorax using a catheter, under direct order of the physician.
Documenting care provided and the patient's status including interventions, assessment of interventions, and focused assessments.
Assisting with procedures as requested by nurse or physician.

Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
Complies with established organization and department policies.
Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
Knowledge & Skills
Requires current competence in CPR, ACLS, PALS or PEPP, and PHTLS or ITLS and other required skills with meticulous adherence to sterile techniques and universal precautions.
Requires completion of a medication administration learning module and competency validation within four weeks of Emergency Care Center start date.
Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to deal tactfully and effectively with physicians, nursing staff, patients, families and other staff members.
Demonstrates effective guest relations behaviors.
Demonstrates effective communication skills (both verbal and written).

Working Conditions
Works in a patient care environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable patient care activities and exposure to biohazards.
Operates patient-related equipment.
Must be able to report to work location within 30 minutes when on call.
