PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Under attorney direction and supervision, performs general, specialized and confidential legal assignments, functions and research for specified area within the Legal Department. Assists with legal proceedings, transactions and other legal matters by identifying problems, needs and procedures. May work closely with other legal, governmental, or regulatory disciplines and a variety of clients, and assists in the planning, research and evaluation process directed towards the management of the Company's legal exposure.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Collect, analyze, organize and maintain the entire array of electronic and hard-copy data, information, records and documents, and utilize applicable software systems (e.g., legal hold and document review platforms), as needed to support Legal and Litigation attorneys and to manage document subpoena productions/responses

  • Under attorney supervision, manage tracking of tort-related matters and outside spend, assist in the coordination of outside counsel and support insurance recovery efforts

  • Develop and maintain a knowledge of other internal procedures and processes in the applicable areas of practice within the law department

  • Under direct supervision of attorney, provide general support as needed to pre-litigation and litigation matters

  • Draft documents that require insertion of basic information and/or utilizing standard format following department practice

  • Special projects for litigation group, non-litigation practice groups or legal operations team

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Minimum:

  • Possess at least two to four years of professional legal experience; possess a high school degree or equivalent; and possess a paralegal certificate from an accredited institution or have a minimum of two to four years of in-depth practical experience, including litigation, in an established law firm.

  • Possess a general knowledge of law firm and legal practices and procedures, including litigation, and the rules or procedures required of the various courts and administrative systems. Possess a working knowledge of legal terminology.

  • Be highly skilled in Microsoft Office and other office applications.

  • Possess and demonstrate initiative and sound judgment required to make decisions without supervision and in the absence of exact established procedures.

  • Possess willingness to accept responsibility and devote the time necessary for success in a legal environment. Possess the ability to meet critical and short deadlines and a commitment to the successful performance of tasks.

  • Possess the ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing and to read and analyze legal materials and other data.

POSITION SCOPE

  • Supports attorneys, company management and senior level paralegal staff in matters involving company personnel, and outside counsel and their staff

  • Supports co-workers regarding department activities and functions

Conducts fact gathering interviews and documents research. * Obtains information required to comply with subpoenas, requests for production of documents, or other forms of pretrial discovery, and conducts investigatory research in litigation matters with in-house attorney guidance. * Maintains litigation electronic database, including uploading key case documents, emails etc. * Maintains key case deadlines in the Commercial Litigation calendar. * Researches and summarizes laws, cases, and files; presents a synopsis to the Attorney for use in preparation for trial or responding to a legal issue. * Ensures timely responses to legal notices and subpoenas. * Receives service of process and coordinates timely assignment of cases to outside counsel. * Prepares legal documents and business communications as needed. * Regular, consistent, and punctual attendance. Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary. * Other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including occasional overflow paralegal support to balance team workload. Qualifications: * Generally requires 3-5 years of related paralegal experience in a corporate or law firm environment. * Previous paralegal experience in a litigation department is highly desired. * Strong project management skills with the ability to handle a high volume of active matters. * Proactive, self-starter, and team player with excellent influencing skills. Ability to follow up with cross functional contacts in a tactful and polite manner. * Bachelor's Degree, Equivalent, and/or Paralegal Certification. * Proficient in MS Office (Word and Excel). * Previous Legal Documentation Management database experience. * Well-developed tracking/record-keeping, analytical, and problem solving skills * Possesses knowledge of the law and legal processes. * Demonstrated ability to employ judgment and experience to make decisions. * Excellent organization, communication (oral and written) , and time management skills.
