Restorative Therapies Group ("RTG") Legal provides legal support to business units across RTG, including in areas of advertising and promotional review, complex contract drafting and negotiation, business development relationships, and dispute management. RTG Legal works closely with cross-functional business partners across RTG and with colleagues across Medtronic Legal to ensure that RTG's legal needs are met. RTG Legal personnel include lawyers at various levels, paralegals, and legal assistants.

The Paralegal Manager will manage the commercial paralegals within RTG Legal that work on commercial contracting and advertising and promotional review and will also perform high level, sophisticated paralegal work. The Paralegal Manager will work across RTG Legal to understand the need for commercial paralegal services, structure paralegal work assignments and allocations to meet RTG Legal's needs, and ensure that we are optimally utilizing our RTG commercial paralegal talent. The Senior Paralegal Manager will also identify opportunities for optimal work distribution across paralegals and legal assistants to ensure that work is being performed at the appropriate level. Management of RTG paralegals focused on product liability litigation, patient claims, and product sales contracting is out-of-scope for the role.

The Paralegal Manager will develop and drive strategy for the RTG commercial paralegal team, possibly including development of new objectives, new operating policies, products, and processes. She/he will face problems and issues that are complex, difficult and undefined, and that require detailed information gathering, analysis and investigation to understand the problem. This role requires deft people skills, including the ability to influence across functions and businesses while balancing divergent objectives to gain cooperation of other parties.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Manages and supervises the collective work of the RTG Legal paralegal team, with an eye toward optimum utilization of resources.

  • Manages and performs high-level, sophisticated paralegal work on behalf of RTG, including but not limited to the following:

  • Reviews advertising and promotional materials in collaboration with other functions, including Marketing, Regulatory, Clinical, and Medical Affairs.

  • Drafts and negotiates complex, bespoke agreements.

  • Conducts research on projects as directed by RTG attorneys.

  • Reviews and ensures compliance with company policies and regulations.

  • Assists internally in analyzing documents.

  • Counsels internal clients on a wide variety of matters and helps to identify and involve the appropriate resources across Medtronic Legal.

  • Communicates with internal and external customers and vendors concerning ongoing operations, programs or processes.

  • People Management:

  • Oversees all commercial paralegal services in RTG Legal other than product liability litigation, patient claims, and product sales contracting.

  • Manages performance, develops talent, drives engagement and inclusion.

  • Plans, prioritizes and directs responsibilities of direct reports.

  • Accountable for mentoring, developing and coaching staff of meeting/exceeding performance expectations and defined objectives.

  • Provides leadership to staff to ensure prioritization of strategic and department level initiatives to include defining performance goals and targets, conducting performance reviews, and staff 1:1s to guide performance management and employee development efforts and manage toward departmental goals.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Travel requirement: 10-20%.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of paralegal experience in a corporate legal environment with a Bachelor's degree; or, 3+ years of paralegal experience in a corporate legal environment with an advanced degree
  • 3+ years of experience managing, training, and/or mentoring other paralegals and legal administrative professionals

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Paralegal skills, including contracting drafting and negotiation skills

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with complex contract drafting and negotiation

  • Prior experience reviewing advertising and promotional materials to ensure compliance with corporate policies and applicable laws and regulations

  • Excellent strategic planning skills

  • Demonstrated success in driving engagement within a matrixed environment

  • Experience working closely with cross-functional and business partners

  • Clear thinking, superior communication skills
