Position Summary

This position is responsible for coordinating the legal review process for credential applications, providing professional support to attorneys in the drafting of legal documents, researching of legal and factual issues, and management of application files. Some of the duties include:

  • Compile and organize complex application files and documents including police records, court records, medical records, and licensing records.

  • Retrieve FBI reports from DOJ database and review results.

  • Review application and renewal files and request additional information as needed.

  • Review, analyze and summarize conviction, discipline, medical condition, malpractice, and/or termination documentation of application files and prepare summary memoranda for division attorneys.

  • Communicate with applicants regarding application status and inquiries regarding legal review of the application. Act as liaison to applicant regarding application file.

  • Monitor the DSPS Credentialing Paralegal inbox and timely respond to customer inquiries.

  • Communicate effectively with Executive Directors, Chief Legal Counsel, Board Counsel, board liaisons, and License/Permit Program Associates regarding application files.

  • Prepare and submit agenda requests relating to credentialing matters when necessary.

  • Utilize team workload tracking tools.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (07-04) with an hourly rate of $24.00 - $28.00, per hour.

Prior to any appointments for position(s) filled from this announcement, candidates may be subject to a comprehensive criminal background check.

This state agency does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours in 26 consecutive pay periods (1 year).

Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions.

Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status.

Certain positions within this Department may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process. For permanent positions that allow remote work flexibility, it is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions may need to report to office locations in Wisconsin on short notice.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have experience with all of the following:

  • Experience using computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Adobe, SharePoint, or comparable. Experience may include activities such as emails in a shared mailbox, using Adobe Pro to edit PDFs, or performing multiple level filter and/or sorting within a spreadsheet.

  • Experience communicating with customers via email.

  • Experience working independently or under general supervision.

  • Experience performing tasks with a high level of attention to detail. Experience may include activities such as drafting correspondence without grammatical errors or proofreading attorney drafts

In addition to having all of the above, well qualified applicants will have experience with one or more of the following:

  • Experience drafting legal documents.

  • Paralegal certification, related degree or experience working in a paralegal role.

  • Experience working with state statutes and administrative code.

  • Experience with criminal law or litigation.
