Under broad supervision of an attorney, provides legal support services to Staff Counsel with an emphasis on matters related to insurance defense tort and/or Workers Compensation litigation matters. Collaboratively works with Claim, Claim Legal and clients as well as other 3rd parties to produce desired results. We work in a high-volume, fast-paced, paper-less work environment; and you may deal with highly sensitive and confidential information.

This is a hybrid role out of one of the following offices: Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Melville or Tarrytown, NY; Plano, TX; Plantation, FL; Santa Ana, CA; Warren, NJ.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

  • Performs timely handling of highly sensitive issues and materials related to all areas of operation within the organization. Monitors files and escalates issues requiring attorney involvement

  • Analyzes contracts, reports, medical reports, financial data, depositions, discovery, investigative and other documents, preparing summaries of same as requested.

  • Collaborates with attorneys and business partners to gather information from clients and others

  • Reviews client/business files providing oversight and suggestions to attorneys and others on appropriate action steps.

  • May interview clients, witnesses and others as required.

  • May locate, contact and act as liaison for expert witnesses in a variety of fields.

  • Under attorney direction may draft, position papers, filings, pleadings, motions, interrogatories and other documents as necessary and assures organization of supporting files.

  • May draft legal documents in compliance with court requests and applicable federal, state, local or administrative regulations.

  • Drafts and prepares correspondence and other written documents as required.

  • May be required to timely and accurately record tasks and time in billing system and meet minimum billing requirements in addition to performing non-billable tasks.

  • May handle tracking and disposition of subpoenas or other requests for information.

  • Keeps current with procedures used by local, state and federal courts or administrative agencies.

  • Reviews and keeps current on evolving case law and new legislation affecting compliance and litigation within area of expertise

  • Collaboratively works with legal staff on various projects.

  • Responds to information requests.

  • Maintains internal records in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Reporting Relationship

Typically Manager or above

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • In depth knowledge of legal terminology, procedures and practices as well as overall general knowledge of the insurance industry and the business units.

  • Requires a strong working knowledge of area of specialization (litigation defense tort and workers compensation).

  • Solid analytical and drafting skills.

  • Excellent internal/external customer interactive skills.

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office suite, legal research tools and business related software systems such as TeamConnect, Adobe, or others.

  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks.

  • Ability to work with and maintain confidential information.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey information in a clear, concise and effective manner.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree, and/or completion of an accredited paralegal program, or equivalent.

  • Typically a minimum of three years of prior paralegal experience in area of responsibility (corporate, employment, securities, regulatory, defense litigation, coverage litigation).

  • Insurance defense background strongly preferred.

  • Multivenue experience or willingness to learn other venues strongly preferred.

In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $44,000 to $74,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
