Job Description

The Paralegal will support primarily the public records and litigation functions of the Office of General Counsel. Specific tasks may include:

  • Reviewing requests for documents or information, such as public records requests, subpoenas, or litigation discovery, to identify potentially relevant and responsive materials.

  • Gathering documents and information, including electronically stored information, from offices throughout the university.

  • Reviewing and analyzing documents for relevance and consistency and redacting documents in accordance with applicable law and policy governing their release.

  • Managing litigation holds and records as well as litigation deadlines and calendars and filing documents with applicable courts and agencies.

  • Monitoring the status of legal matters and communicating regarding deadlines and tasks.

  • Performing research relating to practices, policies, legal requirements, and factual matters.

The position will report to the head of the Employment Practice Group and will work at the direction of attorneys in the Office of General Counsel and in coordination with other university employees on specific matters.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.

  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.

  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in related field and four (4) years legal experience in a relevant area OR, one or more relevant paralegal certifications and four (4) years legal experience in a relevant area OR, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Essential Duties

  • Working cooperatively and with direction from lawyers in the Office of General Counsel

  • Developing and maintaining knowledge of applicable laws and policies, including research as appropriate

  • Gathering documents and information, including electronically stored information, from offices throughout the university

  • Reviewing documents for relevance, consistency, and compliance with policies

  • Drafting, preparing, reviewing, redlining, editing, and finalizing documents legal documents and correspondence

  • Monitoring the status of legal matters and communicating regarding deadlines and tasks

  • Assisting in organizing and presenting information in connection with legal proceedings or negotiations

  • Maintaining accurate records and documents in accordance with administrative, legal, and record retention requirements.

  • Using advanced word processing skills to accurately and professionally draft, format, and edit complex documents.

  • Complying with confidentiality and ethics requirements

  • Supervising support and student staff as appropriate

  • Managing projects and performing other duties as assigned

Salary Range

$29.00 - $33.65 per hour; DOE
