Division of Corporations, Business & Professional Licensing

  is recruiting for Paralegal 2 located in Juneau!

What you will be doing:

At the Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing Division, Paralegals serve to ensure competent, professional, and regulated services are delivered to the community by investigating alleged continuing education violations of statutes and regulations governing 43 different licensed professions in the State of Alaska. The paralegal is the Division's focal point for all Freedom of Information Act document requests in accordance with the Alaska Public Records Act.

The paralegal is further responsible for reporting professional licensing disciplinary actions to national databanks as required by law. This paralegal position supervises a Paralegal 2 and an Office Assistant 2.

The investigation unit supports this mission by investigating and reporting allegations against Alaska's licensed professionals who violate the laws governing their licenses.

The working environment you can expect:

This supervisory position is located in Juneau, Alaska. The Juneau office is located on the 9th floor of the State Office Building in beautiful downtown Juneau. A hybrid schedule of in-office days and teleworking will be considered after a period of training has been completed.

  • Research: Knowledge of the legal and investigative principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including steps, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results

  • Reasoning: Identifies rules, principles, or relationships that explain facts, data, or other information; analyzes information and makes correct inferences or draws accurate conclusions.

  • Technological Competency: Competency with standard office equipment is expected and computer literary and fluency with Microsoft Office is essential to handling the large volume of digital documents and evidence in cases and utilizing the digital case management system.

  • Effective Communicator: Clear and professional oral and written communication is essential to anyone working in the legal field.

  • Ability to Maintain Confidentiality: Strict confidentiality is required due to the nature of the work performed.

  • Independent Worker: Taking initiative, exercising sound judgment, and following directions with minimal supervision is critical in our offices.

The best candidate for this position will have the opportunity to utilize and acquire a wide range of investigative and paralegal skills. The incumbent will join a team of professionals, committed to public service.

Successful completion of training under a formally established Paralegal 1-2 flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska;

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:

  • Administrative Law: Knowledge of State and federal administrative laws, including procedures, regulations, guidelines, and precedents related to case preparation and settlements.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.

  • Stress Tolerance: Deals calmly and effectively with high stress situations (for example, tight deadlines, hostile individuals, emergency situations, dangerous situations).

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

Post-secondary and/or vocational education in a legal, paralegal, criminal justice, or similar legal support area and/or experience performing paraprofessional legal investigation, discovery, and providing support in the preparation of legal cases, reports, documents, and exhibits.

COVER LETTER

The cover letter must address (in detail) each of the position-specific competencies listed above to determine if the applicant has the requisite experience. The position requires extensive communication skills, both verbal and written.

The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to write in a manner indicating their ability to clearly communicate ideas, intent, and direction.

A successful cover letter will give specific examples demonstrating your experience in an area, in which you assert professional competency.  The cover letter should be formatted in the traditional letter style complete with date, inside address, subject line, salutation, body of letter, complimentary close, and signature block. Applicants are advised to pay particular attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar as the cover letter will also be used as a professional writing sample.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS

For your application to be evaluated you must answer the Supplemental Questions.  Be specific in your answers and tell us how you acquired the relevant experience.
