PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under supervision, assist teachers in the overall education, guidance, management, academic assessment and care of students; games and recreation; assist teachers with clerical and other non-instructional duties.DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO:

Administrator of the area of assignment and/or designeePARAEDUCATORS ARE ASSIGNED TO VARIOUS CLASSROOM SETTINGS/PROGRAMS:Exotic Languages: Exotic languages include the following; Arabic, Cantonese, Visayan, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Ilocano, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Mixteco, Tagalog, Portuguese, Punjabi, Tongan, and Vietnamese.Early Childhood Education: Assist in the instruction and supervision of children at the Child Care Development Center.5-A-Day:

Provide nutrition education in traditional classroom, after school program and garden classroom settings.Resource Specialist (RSP) or Special Day Class (SDC): Assist in the instruction and supervision of students under the direction of the Resource Specialist or Special Day Class Teacher.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Provide direct instruction to students in each area of the students program, including: academic subjects, communication skills, social skills, self-help skills, motor skills and recreational skills.Communicate with students using language appropriate to the student's level of understanding.Demonstrate to students the manner in which tasks are performed.Assist with planning and prepare activities, equipment and materials prior to arrival of students.Modify activities to regain student interest and attention.Assist, monitor and reinforce students during the lesson.Assist in the management and housekeeping of the classroom.Assist in mainstreaming students as appropriate.Implement behavior management plans as developed by teacher/ancillary staffs; assist in providing safe environment.Assist with bilingual interpretation during parent/teacher conferences and Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings; assist with written translations of teacher notes and other simple letters/memos; does not provide written translation of formal documents such as IEPs. May have opportunities to provide formal translation services as an extra assignment if qualified as a district translator.Provide First Aid as needed.Monitor and evaluate student progress and complete records.Assist with student testing and complete academic assessment as needed.Paraeducators may have opportunities to assist with District-wide testing.May supervise students as directed by the teacher.Assist in organizing displays, bulletin boards and interest areas appropriate to student goals.Assist substitute teachers as needed.Perform other job-related duties as required.ALISAL UNION SCHOOL DISTRICTPage 2JOB DESCRIPTIONPARAEDUCATOR IIMAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO EXOTIC LANGUAGES:Provide instructional support in the student's primary language.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION:Perform a wide variety of tasks including providing developmental activities with preschool children and their families.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO 5-A-DAY:Attend health fairs, community or promotional events, during the work day, where nutrition education messages are delivered. Document and log educational activities; Assist in the preparation of fruits and vegetables for nutrition lessons.

Preparation of fruits and vegetables may include, but not limited to planting, harvesting, cleaning, cutting, counting and delivery.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO RESOURCE SPECIALIST (RSP) AND SPECIAL DAY CLASS (SDC):Provide instructional support based on students' Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of:Strong English and Spanish verbal and written communication skills including spelling, grammar and punctuation and math; modern office methods and practices; proper phone etiquette and record keeping; First Aid principles and practices.Ability to: Communicate effectively in English and Spanish language both orally and in writing; Demonstrate understanding, patience, a positive attitude and genuine interest in working with students; Physically participate in activities outside the classroom such as: recreational activities and field trips; Handle information in a discreet and confidential manner, plan, formulate and execute clerical procedures and directives in accordance with assigned duties; Become CPR certified, appropriate for the assigned age group, within six (6) months of employment; Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; Perform appropriate CPR and First Aid when necessary.Experience:Working with children

Education:Education as required by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001: High school diploma or equivalent AND two years of higher education study (48 semester units) OR possession of an Associate's or higher degree OR met a rigorous standard of quality and able to demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge or and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics.License(s)/Certificate(s):First Aid within six (6) months of employment; CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment; Behavioral and restraint training within six (6) months employment; Valid California driver's license and evidence of insurability.DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:Working with children in an educational setting.ALISAL UNION SCHOOL DISTRICTPage 3JOB DESCRIPTIONPARAEDUCATOR IIPHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT:Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use telephone, business machines and classroom equipment; vision sufficient to read printed materials; hearing sufficient to conduct in person and telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distance, on the telephone and addressing groups of students; physical agility to push/ pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and to reach overhead, climb and move quickly or run after a child in an emergency situation; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment and respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to assist in lifting a student; physical stamina sufficient to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; physical, mental and emotional tolerance to be exposed to noise generated by students; physical tolerance to be exposed to dust pollen specific agents/ chemicals, cleansers, and foul smells; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. New employees must pass District physical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening.
