BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist in providing additional adult support to students.  All Paraeducators – additional adult support will be assigned to the special education department and scheduled according to student caseload needs.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Provide additional adult support to students with disabilities as directed by the teacher, administrator or administrator designee. E

Observe and control behavior of students needing additional adult support according to approved procedures. E

Monitor and assist students in activities such as drill practice and repetition. E

Provide support to the teacher by assisting in setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper and supplies in classrooms where additional adult support is necessary. E

Work collaboratively with teachers and other employees concerning programs and materials to meet individual student needs for those needing additional adult support. E

Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; assist in maintaining a clean and orderly classroom environment. E

Prepare and assist students needing additional adult support in mainstreamed classes according to established procedures for students. E

Provide feedback to the teacher regarding student performance and behavior. E

Participate in meetings and inservice training programs as assigned. E

Provide instruction and assistance to students needing additional adult support in social, self-help and community skills. E

Perform other related duties as assigned. E

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Special needs, issues and requirements of students with disabilities.

Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, science, grammar, spelling, language and reading.

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Reading and writing communication skills.

Interpersonal relations skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Classroom procedures and conduct.

Operation of a computer and assigned software.

ABILITY TO:

Assist certificated staff with instruction and related activities for special education students.

Assist students in developing self-help and social skills.

Print and write legibly.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.

Communicate effectively with children and adults.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Restrain and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures.

Operate a computer.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:  high school diploma or equivalent and increasingly responsible experience in working with school-age children in an organized setting.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office and instructional equipment.

Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
