Position Summary

Yes

As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, provides comprehensive speech-language services including assessment, therapy, and instruction for students with speech-language disabilities. Consults/collaborates with other school personnel in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of services provided..

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?

1.Provides therapy instruction to students with speech/language disabilities as stated in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

2.Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and group instruction to meet the needs of each student.

3.Assesses the progress of students on a regular basis utilizing tests, measurements and observation skills and/or modified-adapted assessment devices. Provides progress reports as required.

4.Conducts speech/language assessments as part of a comprehensive evaluation.

5.Serves as a member of the school IEP team as appropriate.

6.Assists in the planning and development of student IEPs.

7.Facilitates the implementation of special education and related services in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

8.Assists in organizing and implementing a continuum of appropriate services in the LRE.

9.Provides consultation and support to other service providers regarding implementation of IEPs, reasonable modification, etc.



  1. Consults and confers regularly with colleagues regarding the educational, social, physical, or emotional goals and objectives of students.

  2. Consults regarding materials of instruction (MOI), equipment, and instructional strategies appropriate for students with speech/language disabilities.

  3. Supervises teaching assistants who support the instruction of students with communication disabilities.

  4. Maintains knowledge of current trends and practices in the field of Speech-Language Pathology.

  5. Communicates with parents through conferences, IEP meetings, and other means to discuss student progress and the IEP.

  6. Maintains accurate, complete and correct records, case files, etc., as required by program regulations, Board policies and Federal, state and local laws.

  7. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior required to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.

  8. Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings. Provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, objectives, and methods of instruction for students with speech/language disabilities.

  9. Improves his/her own professional growth through an on-going program of reading, workshops, seminars, in-service activities, conferences and/or advanced coursework at universities, colleges, and other institutions of higher learning.

  10. Performs other duties as required or assigned

Education

  • Hold or be eligible for licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist from the Maryland State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers and Speech-Language Pathologists.

Experience

  • Clinical Fellowship (CF) and/or experienced SLP

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principals and practices of Speech-Language Pathology as applied to children and the school situation.

  • Knowledge of school system organization and operation.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with and to gain the confidence and cooperation of: students, parents, school staff, and medical agency personnel.

  • Ability to interpret and provide/supervise appropriate speech/language services within an educational environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child's education experience. Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.

Licenses/Certifications

  • At the time of application, a candidate must be eligible for licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist from the Maryland State Board of Audiologists, Hearing Aid Dispensers and Speech-Language Pathologists.

  • At the time of application, a candidate must have current Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology awarded by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA).
