The department of Facilities and Services at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Trades Specialist I (Painter).

Under the direction of the Operation Manager, the duties of this position require the individual to perform a variety of painting tasks related to maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment as outlined by University guidelines.

What You'll Do:

  • Applies paints, varnishes, shellacs, urethanes, enamels, stains and other mediums utilizing necessary professional techniques and abilities.

  • Performs work with spray equipment, roller, brush, sponges, etc. to apply medium and uses other necessary related equipment including tape gun and other equipment related to the trade.

  • Stencils and creates signs, murals, and logos on walls, ceilings, doors, and other areas as needed. Hangs wallpaper and boarders, as needed.

  • Applies plaster (brown coat and finish coat) and ensures that all surfaces are smooth and ready. Repairs wire mesh lath to areas as needed.

  • Seals asbestos walls, ceilings, and doors when deemed necessary and safe to do so.

  • Special skill is required to mix and match colors using various bases, pigments, etc. as some paint to be matched may have been discontinued, may be discolored due to age and the elements, or may not be true to prescribed formulas from suppliers and/or manufacturers.

  • Professionally finishes and refinishes wooden items such as furniture, cabinets, doors, door frames, chair rails, base cove, etc. Prepares surfaces for appropriate finishes (sanding, chemical cleaning, etc.)

  • Performs a variety of carpentry related projects; repairs, replaces, and finishes drywall, repairs or replaces chair rails, base cove, reconditions acoustical ceilings, walls and steel beams, repair or replacement etc. per project. Removal and installation of wall hangings objects such as pictures, bulletin boards, coat racks, etc., secure loose trim and base boards, etc.

  • Performs all duties of preparing and applying various types of bases, finishes, and textures (example - cementations and lime, gypsum plasters, lime or gauging or molding as finishes, plaster moldings and rosettes on ceilings, fiber glass reinforced bonding cement and dryvit, and other insulating cement finishes). Applies caulking to doors and window frames meeting masonry.

  • Prepares and applies coats of joint compound and taping joints. Knowledge of different textures such as stomp, wormed, basket weave, and sponge finishes.

  • Removes and replaces electrical switch and receptacle covers as needed for job preparation and disassembles and assembles electrical light fixtures as needed for job preparation and completion.

  • Handles, cuts, and installs various types of glass as required for the repair of interior and exterior windows, restrooms and show mirrors, vehicle mirrors, greenhouse glass, sky lights, doors, display cases, table tops, fire extinguisher cabinets, etc. Must be knowledgeable of various glass retention systems such as glazing, spring clips, snap on metal trim, wood trim, etc. Must ensure all safety procedures are followed when handling glass.

  • Performs duties related to the removal/abatement/ repair of damaged paint/ paint chips and plaster containing various percentages of lead.

  • Must attend hazardous material training. It will also include an annual medical evaluation along with Blood testing every Six (6) months. There will also need to be an annual fit testing for a respirator or a Powered Air Purifying Respirator.

  • May be required to perform the following duties: prepare and install a variety of tile sizes and types for walls and floors; apply adhesives (epoxy, mastic, cementations) for installation in swimming pools, restrooms, and steam rooms; perform tuck-pointing on interior masonry walls and surfaces; perform fire proofing for cable trays and pipe chases and refractory work on boilers; apply various concrete restoration products, as needed, when making repairs to sidewalks, walls, floors, etc.; perform placement and finishing which includes finishing concrete by a variety of different styles and means (concrete broom, magnesium float, steel trowel, and power trowel) for applications such as floors, steps, sidewalks, footers, and retaining walls; install wooden and metal forms needed in the construction of sidewalks, steps, patios, masonry, and wooden structures; interprets blueprints as required in the construction and completion of specific tasks.

  • Assembles scaffoldings-type including but not limited to rolling, pipe, stretch-boards and kick-boards.

  • Must be able to perform duties from various ladders, ladder jacks, and A-frame ladders where applicable, and perform work from a bucket/hydraulic boom truck.

  • Develops requisitions for parts, supplies, etc. from the Warehouse to ensure timely delivery and sequencing.

  • May be required to move, load and carry all materials and equipment necessary to complete all phases of assigned painting, maintenance and construction projects. May be required to assist in the effort of moving any existing conditions, which interfere with the flow of the project. When project is completed, work site must be left in a clean and orderly fashion.

  • Shall train and supervise student workers on the safe, correct, and practical ways to plaster, paint, and hang wallpaper as needed.

  • Shall assume responsibilities of Manager I and/or Lead in his/her absence.

  • Must be able to respond during off hours to cover emergency situations.

  • May be required to assist in duties in relation to normal journeymen responsibilities or assisting other trades as needed. Also may assist with snow removal.

  • May be required to operate computers utilizing various software programs such as: Facilities Management maintenance management programs involving work orders and materials accountability, building support systems, and other systems as necessary.

Pay Grade: 13

Work Hours: Monday

  • Friday, 6am

  • 2pm

  • Vocational or technical school of up to 18 months beyond high school or equivalent.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience involving:

  • All types of surface preparation and professional applications of oil and latex based paints.

  • Professional plastering abilities.

  • Repair, replacement, preparation and finishing of drywall.

  • Surface preparation and installation of wallpaper, sign painting, and general mathematical abilities.

  • Must have experience in woodwork finishing, staining, and varnishing.

  • Experience with airless mechanical paint sprayers and power washers.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to perform mathematical computations.

  • Ability to operate a personal computer.

  • Knowledge of warehousing procedures.

  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.

  • Ability to work with people in stressful environment.

  • Ability to have excellent eye to hand coordination.

  • Ability to hear and interpret sounds in work area and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to use logical problem-solving techniques.

  • Ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to work in uncomfortable positions as may be required by job assignment.

  • Ability to work with multi-crafted personnel.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain average or above average work standards.

  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, parts, and materials.

  • Ability to organize workflow to ensure work is completed in a timely manner.

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical skills.

  • Ability to operate manual and power hand tools.

  • Ability to understand MSDS sheets.

  • Ability to train and supervise student workers.

  • Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, equipment, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Must know location of electrical breaker panels.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in various trade fields such as carpentry or electrical.
