Seattle Public Utilities' (SPU) Clean City Division has an exciting opportunity for two (2) Painters. These painters will be a vital part of the Graffiti Ranger Unit and  play a key role in supporting the Mayor's "One City Graffiti Plan" as well as the "beautification of Downtown" project. The location for these vacancies is 1509 South Spokane Street, and the position will report to the Graffiti Ranger Crew Chief.

  • Prepare surface for painting, power washing, sanding, filling and applying undercoating.

  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks to ensure proper adhesion and wear.

  • Mix and match paint and prepare for application.

  • Apply paint and other protective coatings to various surfaces by brush, roller and spray methods.

  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding, remove or cover objects, clean work areas and maintain brushes, rollers, spray, and other equipment.

  • Provide technical advice on graffiti removal to other City department staff and general public.

Experience/Education:

  • Requires completion of a painter apprenticeship program OR three (3) years in the painting trade working under a journey-level painter performing a variety of work in the trade.

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Graffiti removal experience.

  • Ability to work well individually as well as on a team.

  • Good customer service skills.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Proven history of good attendance and punctuality.

  • Experience sandblasting and pressure washing.

  • Basic computer skills.

  • Ability to read street maps (e.g. Thomas Guide).

Licensing and/or Other Requirements:

  • At the time of appointment must hold a valid Washington State Driver License. 

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time

  • Frequently required to lift objects in excess of 50 pounds

  • Requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances

  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather

  • Required to work at heights on scaffolding and ladders

  • Works in cramped spaces

The full salary for this position is $46.16 - $46.16 per hour.
