Position Summary

A Journeyman Painter I will support and execute the safe, quality, and efficient completion of various tasks related to coatings maintenance work being performed at a petrochemical processing plant, including but not limited to:

  • Craft specific coatings labor

  • Surface preparation utilizing various methods as well as the removal, preparation, mixing, and application of various types of coatings systems on industrial equipment such as piping, fittings, valves, boilers, towers, vessels, tanks, exchangers, reactors, pumps, etc. as well as various fireproofing on various structural components/equipment and internal/external coatings on/in buildings, structures, and other surfaces to include furniture and finish carpentry.

  • Providing support services such as but not limited to firewatch, holewatch, bottlewatch, light equipment/vehicle operation, material kitting/delivery, general housekeeping, etc.

  • Must be willing and able to work:

o Up to 7 days per week

o Overtime, call-out, etc. as required

  • Must be capable of working under the direction of a skilled Leadman and under the supervision of an experienced Foreman.

  • Must be experienced with and/or capable of successfully completing all required training/qualifications necessary to oversee safety-sensitive work which includes but is not limited to the preparation, set-up, and execution of hot work, confined space entry, and fresh air work.

  • Must be experienced with and/or capable of successfully completing all required training/qualifications necessary to utilize all related tools, apparatuses, equipment, etc. to execute safety-sensitive work which includes but is not limited to the preparation, set-up, and execution of hot work, confined space entry, and fresh air work.

  • Will be expected to assist other crafts when not actively performing painter activities.

  • Must be capable of reading, understanding, and adhering to restrictions and/or requirements of various types of work permits and/or JSAs.

  • Must successfully complete Short Service Employee (SSE) program, if applicable.

  • Must successfully complete a 90-day probationary period. Any disciplinary and/or attendance issues during this time will be grounds for termination.

  • Must maintain satisfactory bi-annual evaluation scores of no less than 3.0. Unsatisfactory bi-annual evaluation scores of less than 3.0 for two consecutive cycles will result in disciplinary action, up to termination, for poor performance.

Position Responsibilities

  • Must have a strong approach, understanding, and commitment to safety, quality, and efficiency in an industrial environment.

  • Must be capable of and will be expected to perform pre-task hazard assessments to identify potential risks and implement pro-active elimination and/or mitigation techniques.

  • Must have extensive and demonstrated experience performing coatings maintenance on various types of industrial equipment in a petrochemical facility.

  • Must actively participate and support site programs such as (at a minimum):

o Safe Catch/Quality Catch/Stop Work Authority

o Continuous Improvement (SMART Focus)

o Applicable customer initiatives/programs

Current or Former Zachry Employee with acceptable ESR rating only.

Reports to Position

This position does not have any direct reports.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Performance Verified (PV) certification for Painter I or certification from accredited Coatings training program.

  • Coatings Application Specialist (CAS) certification advantageous and preferred however, not required.

  • Must have a minimum score of 81% on the Zachry Craft Assessment test pre-employment.

  • Must have at a minimum 4 years of related experience as a Painter.

  • Must have experience using industrial hand and power tools in an industrial work environment.

  • Must possess good problem-solving abilities and an agile mindset.

  • Must possess aptitude for mechanical equipment, have effective computing, literacy, and numeracy skills, and manual dexterity.

  • Must possess the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.

  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) and valid Driver's License.

  • Must possess effective communication skills (written and/or verbal) with co-workers, supervisors, and customer.

  • Must possess a strong commitment/understanding of Zachry and customer core values, safety rules, and regulations.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid TWIC card for the duration of employment.

  • Must successfully complete and maintain applicable Safety Council and/or Site-Specific credentials for the duration of employment.

  • Must be capable of reading and comprehending technical manuals as well as industrial/engineered drawings such as but not limited to blueprints, sketches, plans, P&ID, SDS, product spec/application sheets, etc. to determine scope of work, locations, required tools/equipment, and bill of materials to execute activities.

  • Must poses knowledge and experience of hoisting/lifting/and rigging practices to execute these activities in a safe and controlled manner with the assistance of come-along, cranes, etc.

  • Must poses knowledge and experience with setting up/utilizing various types of coatings equipment such as but not limited to pumps, pots, compressors, dryers, air handlers, high pressure washers up to 40k psi, hoses, fittings, mixers, agitators, heaters, spray guns, spray rigs (airless, plural, conventional, etc.), common power tools (grinders, needle guns, etc.), dehumidifiers, vacuum systems, conveying systems/belts, UHP systems, wet head blasting, etc.

  • Must poses knowledge and understanding of SSPC surface preparation standards such as, but not limited to:

o SP-2

o SP-3

o SP-5

o SP-6

o SP-7

o SP-10

o SP-12

  • Must poses knowledge and experience with general inspections such as, but not limited to SSPC Visual Standards, air and/or steel temperatures, dew point and/or

humidity, salt/chloride, wet/dry film, holiday/jeep tests (Low & High Voltage), blast profile, blotter, and black light.

  • Must posses knowledge and experience with coating systems and blast media such as, but not limited to, single component, two component, plural component, external protective coating systems, internal linings, under insulation systems, subsurface systems, high heat systems, fire protection, Belzona systems, coal slag, garnet, glass bead, UHP, etc.

  • Must be capable of leading and mentoring other crew members such as helpers, apprentices, and Journeymen II.

  • Must posses knowledge, skills, and experience with Lead testing and abatement activities.

  • Must possess skills and ability to preplan, coordinate, and order material for specific jobs/activities/tasks.

  • Will be expected to assist other crafts when not actively performing painter activities.

Physical Requirements

  • Employee will be required to adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, cycling, bending, squatting, lifting, and physically demanding work.

  • Must have good dexterity with hands and fingers to perform the precision adjustments of machinery parts and controls.

  • Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.

  • Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and moving up to 50lbs.

  • Must be capable and comfortable working at extreme heights on fixed, temporary, and/or mobile platforms.

  • Must be capable and comfortable working within confined spaces to include but not limited to tanks, vessels, pits, excavations, etc.

  • Will use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception and peripheral vision.

  • Must be capable of working outside in the elements including but not limited to the heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind; and must be able to work for long period of times up to 12 hours a day.

  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves, chemical suits, and steel-toe boots.

  • Must be clean shaven.
